Hines Leads Bowling to Two More Wins at Hawk Classic

MILLSBORO, Del. (November 19, 2022) – The Mount bowling team picked up two more wins during traditional play at the Hawk Classic hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore. Wins came against St. Francis Brooklyn and the #22 ranked Sharks of Long Island.

Sophomore Rachel Hines was exceptional, rolling an 830 four game total for a 207.5 average. Freshman Sierra Calo also stepped up with a 951 five game total (190.2 average) on the challenging conditions.

#11 Mount: 818 | #13 Maryland Eastern Shore: 994

The battle between the two highest ranked teams in the Old Line State went to the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore. The Hawks found some high scoring performances on fresh, while the Mount fell victim to two games below 150 in the one and two hole.

#11 Mount: 833 | St.  Francis Brooklyn: 686

The tough conditions became only tougher when a lane breakdown forced the two teams to move to an unused pair. The Mount grinded out an 833 to improve to 1-1 on the day behind a 220 from Hines.

#11 Mount: 890 | #10 Fairleigh Dickinson: 1,055

The Mount picked a bad a time to play FDU as the Knights rolled their highest set of the weekend with a 1,055. A 235 from Calo would be the only score over 200 from MSM.

#11 Mount: 950 | #22 Long Island: 892

The first close match of the day for the Mountaineers resulted in a win as all five Mount Bowlers kept their heads above 160. Hines led the way with a 241. #17 Tulane: 864

#11 Mount: 894 | #3 Vanderbilt: 1,026

The hottest team in the building remained hot as the tournament leading Commodores tossed a 1,026 to an 894 from MSM. Calo (218) and Hines (201) once again led the Mount.

"We found ourselves in a roster carousel once again today," said head coach Kenneth DeGraaf. "It is just tough to get in a groove as a team when the lineup cannot stay the same for more than 10 frames. It was never the same culprit, but rather it seemed we took turns with who would open or toss a low game. In the traditional format it is important to have five individuals come together and pull their weight. It seemed every potentially good set was thrown off by a sub 150 game. The one game we got everyone over 150, we had enough fire power for a respectable set. Hats off to Rachel and Sierra for leading the way today, but tomorrow we will have to find a way to get them to stay hot and find three others to join them. In our sport no one can do it alone. It has to be a team effort with a team game plan at how to attack the lanes and clean frames."

The Mount will conclude the Fall Semester of competition tomorrow with bracket play. The team will open up against a familiar foe as they take on the Green Wave of Tulane for the fifth time this season. The season series is currently tied at two apiece. Competition begins at 8:30 AM and will be streamed live on Bowl TV.
