WATCH
EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 29, 2022) – With a refreshed roster and a full season of games ready to be played, Mount St. Mary's women's water polo embarks on their second season with two games at the 2022 Bucknell Invitational.
MOUNT UPDATE
Building a brand new team is never easy, especially when you attach a pandemic to it. Nine players played a partial inaugural campaign, going 0-15.
Ana Luisa Cotta led the team with 18 goals and
Rebekka Williams tallied 137.
Year two sees Cotta return, along with five of her original teammates. Joining them are 11 newcomers, making for a more complete and deeper roster. Most are true freshmen, with
Naomi Sanders and
Serena Thurman coming in as graduate transfers. Williams was the lone goalkeeper last year but this year there will be three, all incoming freshmen.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
VMI went 6-12 last season, including two victories against the Mountaineers. At the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, the Keydets advanced on a no-contest with Long Island before falling to Marist. Californian Sydney Shettleroe led the squad last year with 43 goals and returns for her junior year.
Saint Francis U finished 2021 at 10-12 and earned a third place finish at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Championships, which serves as the highest win percentage in program history. A top returner for the Red Flash is Taylor Halbauer, an All-CWPA Second Team honoree with 52 goals from her sophomore season.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The two teams account for six of the Mount's 15 inaugural games, with SFU the most frequent opponent at four games. The closest match was a 17-7 decision in favor of the Red Flash on March 6
