Mount’s Fourth Quarter Comeback Thwarted by Hobart as the Mountaineers Lose 13-9

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 20, 2021) – Mount Saint Mary's men's lacrosse had their fourth quarter comeback foiled by three late goals from Hobart to drop the Mountaineers to 0-2 in the NEC. Matt Haggerty, Brendan Doyle, and Jake Krieger each had two goals, with Brenden McCarthy contributing a goal and two assists to lead the offense for the Mountaineers today. The Mount's man down defense was stellar allowing only one goal on 10 extra man opportunities for the Statesmen today.

Hobart was led by Bradley Simas who scored three goals and tallied an assist, while Derrek Madonna and Jason Knox contributed three points apiece to lead the Statesmen to victory.

Senior Dylan Furnback made 11 saves for the Mountaineers, while sophomore Kevin Holtby made 13 saves for the Statesmen.

The game started off with a goal from Haggerty to give the Mountaineers an early lead. The Mount held onto it for a couple of minutes until Anthony Dattellas got Hobart on the scoreboard to tie it up. Doyle scored to make it 2-1, but the Statesmen responded 19 seconds later with a goal of their own to make it tied again. Hobart scored to make it 3-2 and the score stayed that way going into the second quarter.

Knox scored his first goal of the day to extend their lead to two. Simas scored two goals to make it 6-2 midway through the second quarter. McCarthy scored to end their 5-0 run and make it 6-3. Hobart and the Mount traded late goals to keep the deficit at three for the Mountaineers heading into halftime. 

Hobart scored their only man advantage goal of the day eight seconds into the third quarter to put the score at 8-4. Madonna scored his only goal of the day to extend the lead to five, but Noah Daniels and Connor McMahon each scored to put the deficit back at three. Hobart ended the third quarter with Simas third goal of the day to make it 10-6.

Haggerty scored 44 seconds into the fourth quarter to spark a 3-0 run for the Mountaineers. Krieger scored his second to cut the deficit to two and Doyle ran through multiple defenders and fired a shot past the keeper to put the Mount down by one with 4:33 remaining in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, Hobart ended the game on a 3-0 run to pull away and come away victorious by a score of 13-9 at Waldron Family Stadium.

Sam Stephan went 5-out-of-11 (45.45%) from the X today.

The Mount is now 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the NEC, while Hobart improves to 2-1 overall and in the NEC. The Mountaineers travel to Philadelphia next to face Saint Joseph's on Saturday, March 27th at 1:00 p.m.
