EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 11, 2021) – In what will amount to a grueling push to the finish line for the regular season, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball crosses the halfway point of Northeast Conference play against Long Island this weekend.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Looking for a fourth straight victory over the Sharks Saturday, the Mount holds a 37-24 advantage in the series. That mark includes winning records at home and in Brooklyn. All three wins in the current streak stem from last year, when the Mount swept the regular season series before downing the Sharks a third time in the NEC quarterfinals.
Six players registered double digits for the Mount in the 80-47 postseason triumph, led by
Bridget Birkhead with 17 points.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
This weekend's games terminate a two-week long hiatus for the Mount, which is the second lengthy absence from game action in this unique year. Games against Bryant and Wagner were postponed as those teams paused for COVID-19 precautions.
Mount St. Mary's stands in third place in the NEC with a 6-2 record, holding onto one of the coveted top four spots for qualification into the conference tournament. In their most recent games the Mount split with Fairleigh Dickinson at home.
Kendall Bresee earned a pair of double-doubles to win NEC Player of the Week honors.
SCOUTING THE SHARKS
At 3-9, LIU is in dire straits in terms of finding a top four spot. The Sharks were a fraction of a second away from forcing overtime in a game at Merrimack, but replay showed that the ball had not left Brandy Thomas' hand, nullifying a buzzer-beater triple.
Thomas is the key for LIU's successes, leading her team in points per game (13.0) and second in rebounds (6.6). Alongside her are a host of supporting players which include leading rebounder and blocker Kiara Bell, assist leader Ryan Wiese and steals leader Shyla Sanford.
LOOKING AHEAD
Thanks to delays and postponements, the Mount will be averaging a game every two days down the stretch. Games scheduled include Bryant, Merrimack, Saint Francis U and Wagner.
