MOUNT UPDATE
The Mount men's lacrosse team got back in the win column with a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory over Utah in game where the Mountaineers trailed as much as four at one point. Luke Frankeny's second one-handed highlight reel goal of the game sent the Utes flying back to Utah with an overtime loss. Brenden McCarthy led the Mountaineer offense with five points (3g, 2a). Kadin Kightlinger (2), Kelly Gouin, Joe Bethke, and Noah Daniels each tallied a goal in the victory. Dylan Furnback made nine saves, including a key save in overtime, in cage to earn the victory over Utah. Utah did not have an answer for Sam Stephan at the X, who went 21-for-25 and picked up 15 groundballs. The New Jersey native also tallied an assist in the win. The Mountaineers won the groundball battle over the Utes 38 to 28 and will look to do the same on Tuesday night against a desperate Hopkins team.
SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
Johns Hopkins comes into Tuesday's matchup with the Mountaineers desperate and hungry for a win after dropping their past four contests all to ranked teams. A 15-7 season opening win over Towson, the Blue Jays dropped four-straight at the hands of Loyola, North Carolina, Princeton, and Syracuse. Senior Cole Williams leads this Hopkins offense with 12 points (7g, 5a) while Garrett Degnon is the Blue Jays leader in goals with nine. Sophomore star Joey Epstein has been quiet this year as he has battled injury through the first couple games. As a freshman, Epstein led the Hopkins offense with 48 goals and 25 assists. Kyle Prouty has taken the majority of draws for Hopkins going 58.3% (56-96) so far this season. Ryan Darby has started four of five games in net and posted 13.23 goals against average with a .473 save percentage.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins currently hold a 7-0 edge over the Mountaineers in the all-time series between the schools. Last year marked the first time the Mount met Johns Hopkins since back in April of 2014. Flashing back to almost a year ago, the #17-ranked Blue Jays' defense stifled the Mountaineer offense and took the game 11-4. Luke Frankeny, Brendan Doyle, Brenden McCarthy, and Chris DiPretoro each tallied a goal apiece in the loss for the Mountaineers. Dylan Furnback made 14 saves in net, but was not enough and earned the loss.
