(Saturday, March 8th) – Luke Frankeny's one-handed wrap-around goal helped the Mount men's lacrosse team (3-4) triumph over Utah (3-3) 11-10 at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday. The overtime winner was Frankeny's third goal of the game while Brenden McCarthy led the Mountaineers with five points (3g, 2a). Kadin Kightlinger (2), Kelly Gouin, Joe Bethke, and Noah Daniels each tallied a goal in the victory. Utah had a quick start to today's showdown, scoring the first three goals of the game and holding the Mountaineer offense to zero scores in the first quarter. The Mount would eventually get on the board with Frankeny's first one-handed goal of the day to open the second frame. After back-to-back Utah goals, the Mount found themselves down 5-1. This where the Mount went on their run. Two consecutive goals from Kightlinger, one assisted by McCarthy and the other J.P. Morris, had cut the Utes lead to two. Frankeny and McCarthy (2) would notch the final three goals of the half to take a 6-5 lead into the break.
After Jimmy Perkins tied the game up to open the half, back-to-back Mount goals from McCarthy and Noah Daniels gave the Mount their first two-goal lead of the game. A late Utah goal from Colin Burke would have the Mountaineers up only one heading into the final quarter of play.
A man-up goal from Gouin to begin to the fourth had the Mount up 9-7 with 12:54 to play. Unfortunately, the next two goals of the game would come from the Utes to knot this game at nine apiece. With 2:29 remaining, Bethke bullied his defender to get his hands free and put home his first of the day to have the Mountaineers back up 10-9. Just over a minute later, James Sexton got his opportunity to tie the game and he buried it for the Utes. After the Mount could not score on the final possession, we headed to overtime tied at 10-10.
A crease violation in the opening overtime possession for the Mount gave the Utes a chance to fly home with a win. Josh Stout was able to get free and fired a shot off, but it drilled the crossbar and Utah maintained possession. Shortly after, Sexton was able to get a shot off, but it was denied by Furnback. On the other end, Frankeny was able to get a mismatch behind the cage, and the rest is history as the Mountaineers prevail 11-10 in overtime.
Utah did not have an answer for Sam Stephan at the X, who went 21-for-25 and picked up 15 groundballs. The New Jersey native also tallied an assist in the win. The Mountaineers won the groundball battle over the Utes 38 to 28.
Colin Burke led the Utes with three goals and an assist while Aaron Fjeldsted tallied two goals of his own. Utah used two goalies who each got 30 minutes of play in net. Zion DeChesere was charged with the loss in net allowing five goals and making nine saves. Liam Donnelly played the first half, making nine saves as well and allowing six goals.
The Mountaineers will have a quick turnaround as they head to Baltimore, Maryland to take on Johns Hopkins on Tuesday, March 11th at 6:00 p.m. This will be the final non-conference matchup for the Mount as Northeast Conference play begins next Saturday at Sacred Heart.
