MOUNT UPDATE: Kayla Hughes scored early in the second half to lift the Mount to a 1-1 draw with Fairleigh Dickinson in the Northeast Conference opener on Sunday. Hughes leads the Mount with four goals this season. Maggie Barron made six saves in the tie, including a crucial one in the first overtime. Barron has a 1.10 goals against average and a .750 save percentage in five starts this year.
ABOUT LIU BROOKLYN: LIU Brooklyn lost its Northeast Conference opener, 1-0, in overtime at Saint Francis U to fall to 2-7-2 overall. Marian Awad leads the Blackbirds with six goals this season while Kimberly Butland has two goals and a pair of assists for six points. LIU has had three different goalkeepers start: Meghan Haley (3GP, 1.42 GAA, .789 SV Pct.), Aline Allman (5 GP, 1.56 GAA, .750 SV Pct.) and Megan Virgin (6 GP, 2.36 GAA, .760 SV Pct.). LIU is 2-1-1 at home this season.
ALL-TIME SERIES: LIU Brooklyn holds a 15-5-1 lead in the all-time series with the Mountaineers. The Blackbirds have won the past two matchups, and five of the last six in the series. Last year, LIU edged the Mount, 1-0, at Waldron Family Stadium. Three of the past six games have gone to overtime, with LIU winning all three times. The Mountaineers are 0-10-0 all-time on the road against LIU Brooklyn.
LAST YEAR'S MATCHUP: Dana Wiesmore scored on a header on a cross from Kimberly Butland 32 seconds into the second half to lift LIU to a 1-0 win last year at the Mount's Waldron Family Stadium. The Mount held a 20-to-14 edge in shots in the game, and a 10-to-3 advantage in corner kicks. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior Kayla Hughes was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday. Hughes tallied three goals in a pair of games to pace the Mount offense. She scored twice in a 4-3 loss at UMBC before scoring the Mount's lone goal in the 1-1 draw with Fairleigh Dickinson. Hughes leads the Mount with four goals and eight points.
CAPTAINS: Lauren Bogardus, Charlotte Elrod, Bianca Gillman, Gianna Pomykacz and Jenna West will be the Mount's captains in 2018.
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Mountaineers were picked ninth in the annual Northeast Conference preseason coaches poll that was released on Monday. Two-time defending champion Saint Francis U is the preseason favorite.
