New Britain, Conn. (May 8, 2016)---Julian Woods and Kelly Yanucil each won gold medals to pace the Mount St. Mary's University men's and women's track and field teams on the final day of the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday. The Mount men's team finished in fourth place while the women finished in fifth. Mount freshman Brian Sagendorf was named the most outstanding rookie performer of the men's meet after winning the javelin on Saturday.
Woods led the Mountaineer men with a first-place finish in the 110m hurdles while also finishing in second place in the 400m hurdles. Woods took home the gold medal in the 110m hurdles with a winning time of 14.20 seconds. He finished in second place in the 400m hurdles to earn Second Team All-NEC with a time of 54.92 seconds.
Also scoring for the Mount on Sunday were D.J. Workcuff (7th in 200m, 22.19), Christopher Eltringham (7th in the 800m, 1:57.08), Benjamin Finnigan (6th in the 1500m, 3:58.66), Nick Fransham (7th in the 5,000m, 15:55.01), Chase Boyle (5th in the shot put, 14.21m), Zachary Delker (6th in the shot put, 14.05m) and Brenden Chavis (6th in the discus, 41.66m). The Mount's 4x100m relay team of Keiko Martin, Colin Waitzman, Brandan Redhi and Workcuff finished in third.
Yanucil won the javelin for the second consecutive year to pace the Mountaineer women's team. Yanucil had a winning throw of 46.41m. Moriah Fitzgerald finished in second place in the pole vault with a mark of 3.55m to earn Second Team All-NEC honors as well.
Other Mountaineers to score on Sunday included Jessica Whitmore (3rd in the 100m, 12.12), Genamarie McCant (4th in the 400m, 56.39), Clarke Hooper (6th in the 800m, 2:26.70), Helena Leyrer (3rd in 100m hurdles, 14.15 and 6th in 400m hurdles (1:07.06) and Kirsten O'Malley (5th in triple jump, 11.24m). The Mount's 4x400m relay team of Mariah McLane, Leyrer, Hooper and McCant finished in third place.
On the men's side, host Central Connecticut won with 208 points, followed by LIU Brooklyn (154), Saint Francis U (132.5), Mount St. Mary's (83), Fairleigh Dickinson (81), Sacred Heart (71.5), Wagner (38), Bryant (25) and St. Francis Brooklyn (22).
Sacred Heart won the women's meet with 183 points followed by LIU Brooklyn (158), Fairleigh Dickinson (85), Robert Morris (81), Mount St. Mary's (74), Central Connecticut (71), Saint Francis U (66), Wagner (52.5), Bryant (37.5) and St. Francis Brooklyn (10).
