New Britain, Conn. (May 7, 2016)—Chase Boyle, Natalia Hinton and Brian Sagendorf each won gold medals to pace the Mount St. Mary's University track and field teams on the first day of the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. The Mount men's team is in second place with the women in fourth place in the overall standings.
Boyle led a one-two finish for the Mount in the hammer throw, winning the gold medal with a toss of 54.86m. Teammate Brenden Chavis finished in second place with a mark 52.36m.
Sagendorf captured gold in come-from-behind fashion in the javelin. The freshman had his winning throw of 60.65m on his fifth throw of the competition to edge Central Connecticut's Jeremy Willis by 0.37m.
Hinton took home first-place honors in the long jump to pace the Mount women's team on the first day of competition. Hinton had a mark of 5.78m to win the gold medal for the Mountaineers with teammate Isabel Ross finishing in fifth place (5.23m).
Also for the Mount men, D.J. Workcuff finished fourth in the long jump (6.66m) with teammate Carlos Castello finishing in seventh place (6.49m). Colin Waitzman finished in sixth place in the pole vault with a mark of 4.30m.
For the women, Michaela Hollister finished fifth in the high jump (1.58m) and Virginia Owusu-Mainoo seventh in the shot put (12.83m).
Central Connecticut leads the men's standings with 72 points, followed by the Mount (39), Saint Francis U (32.5), Wagner (22), Sacred Heart (21.5), Fairleigh Dickinson (20), LIU Brooklyn (14), Bryant (8) and St. Francis Brooklyn (5).
Sacred Heart holds the first day lead in the women's standings with 81 points, followed by Robert Morris (35), Saint Francis U (22), the Mount (20), LIU Brooklyn (19), Fairleigh Dickinson (19), Wagner (15), Bryant (13) and Central Connecticut (10).
Qualifying for the finals tomorrow for the men's team were Julian Woods (110m hurdles, 14.28; 400m hurdles, 53.45), Benjamin Finnigan (1500m, 4:06.90), Christopher Eltringham (800m, 1:54.45), Workcuff (200m, 22.00),
On the women's side, Helena Leyrer (100m hurdles, 14.42; 400m hurdles, 1:02.79), Genamarie McCant (400m, 56.92), Jessica Whitmore (100m, 12.27) and Clarke Hooper (800m, 2:19.24) all qualified for the finals.
