Jacksonville, Fla. (May 26, 2016)—Mount St. Mary's University junior Kelly Yanucil (Bordentown, N.J.) has earned a spot in the NCAA Finals in the javelin. Yanucil finished in ninth place at the NCAA East Preliminary today to earn her a trip to Eugene, Ore. The top 12 in the field of 48 moved on to the finals, which will be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field on June 8-11.
Yanucil's second throw of the day was for 48.62m (159' 6"), advancing her to the NCAA finals. She opened by throwing 46.49m (152' 6") and ended her day with a mark of 45.86m (150' 5"). The women's final in the javelin will be held on Thursday, June 9, at 5:45 p.m.
Yanucil, the back-to-back Northeast Conferaence champion in the javelin, moves on to the finals this year after narrowly missing out on advancing last season. She finished in 14th place, just five inches behind the 12th place finisher in 2015.
The last Mountaineer to advance to the NCAA Finals was Tom FitzSimons, who earned Second Team All-America honors after finishing in 13th place in the decathlon in 2012.
Junior Julian Woods (Sykesville, Md.) also competed today in the 400m hurdles. Woods finished fourth in his heat and just missed out on qualifying for the NCAA quarterfinals tomorrow. Woods ran the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.08 seconds, missing out on the quarterfinals by .04 seconds. The top three from each of today's heats plus the next six fastest times advanced to the next round. Woods had the seventh-fastest time after the top three finishers in each heat.
Tomorrow, freshman Brian Sagendorf (Elizabeth, N.J.) competes in the javelin for the Mountaineers.
