Brian Sagendorf, Julian Woods and Kelly Yanucil Headed to NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville

May 24, 2016--The Mount St. Mary's University men's and women's outdoor track and field team is sending three athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary, hosted by Jacksonville University on May 26-28.  Kelly Yanucil (Bordentown, N.J.) and Brian Sagendorf (Elizabeth, N.J.) will each participate in the javelin while Julian Woods (Sykesville, Md.) is competing in the 400m hurdles.

Woods qualifed for the NCAA East Preliminary with his time of 52.09 at the Bucknell Team Challenge in late April. Seeded 35th in the field, this is the second time that Woods has advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary.  As a freshman in 2014, he made it to the NCAA Quarterfinals, finishing 24th in the East Preliminary with a time of 53.66 seconds.

Woods, who finished second in the Northeast Conference in the 400m hurdles,  is running in the fourth heat of six on Thursday.  The top three from each heat plus the next six fastest times advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals, which will be held on Friday.  The top three from each quarterfinal heat plus the next three fastest times advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Yanucil, the back-to-back NEC Champion in the javelin, will compete in the javelin on Thursday at noon.  Seeded 12th after her throw of 50.47m at the George Mason Spring Invitational, Yanucil will have three throws, and will advance to the NCAA Finals if she finishes in the top 12 in the field of 48.  Yanucil is competing in the third group of 16 throwers.

This is the second consecutive season that Yanucil has competed at the NCAA East preliminary.  Last season, she narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA Division I Championships, finishing in 14th place in the field of 48 competitors with a toss of 48.04m (157' 7").  She finished just five inches behind the 12th place finisher (Ashley Aldredge, Northwestern St., 48.17m, 158').

Sagendorf advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary with his throw of 65.65m at the Penn Relays on April 28.   The NEC champion in the javelin, Sagendorf is seeded 35th in the field of 48 competitors.  He is throwing in the first group of 16 competitors on Friday, and will advance to the NCAA Finals if he finishes in the top 12 in the field of 48.
