Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 12, 2016)--Mount St. Mary's rallied from a five-goal second-half deficit to tie the score, but saw UMBC recover to earn a 14-11 win over the Mount at Waldron Family Stadium on Tuesday night. Mark Hojnoski paced the Mount with four goals in the loss.
Trailing 10-5 with under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Mount (5-5) scored five consecutive goals to even the score. Hojnoski started the run with his second goal of the game with 3:25 left in the third to cut the deficit to four. Two minutes later, Hojnoski fed Justin Gosnell, who buried the shot to make the score 10-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
Chris DiPretoro's goal just under a minute into the fourth cut the deficit to two, and Gosnell scored a minute later to make the score 10-9 with 13:05 left in the game. The Mount rally continued when Hojnoski scored from right in front of the goal on a feed from C.J. Ciserano to tie the game with 8:58 left in the contest.
The Retrievers (3-7) were able to recover, scoring the next four goals of the game to secure the win. Jack Andrews scored the go-ahead goal with 6:37 on the clock, and Pat Clipp scored 44 seconds later to make it 12-10. Steve Winsor and Andrews continued the run to make it 14-10 with just under three mintutes left. Hojnoski stopped the UMBC scoring run with his fourth goal of the game with 1:37 on the clock, but the Mount was unable to score again.
UMBC grabbed the momentum early to take a 5-1 lead. After Hojnoski staked the Mount to a 1-0 lead, UMBC's Max Maxwell evened the score. UMBC's Nate Lewnes then took over, scoring the next four goals of the game to give UMBC a four-goal advantage. His final goal of the run was an extra-man goal 28 seconds into the second quarter.
The Mount's Bubba Johnson scored with a man-up, but Lewnes tallied his fifth goal of the first half to make it 6-2 with 8:31 left in the second quarter. DiPretoro and UMBC's Max Haldeman exchanged goals before Johnson scored with 49 seconds left in the half to make it 7-4.
Hojnoski led the Mount with four goals and two assists for a six-point night while Johnson chipped in three goals and an assist in the loss. DiPretoro and Gosnell chipped in two goals each for the Mountaineers.
Lewnes finished with a game-high six goals while Andrews chipped in three goals and an assist. Maxwell added a goal and four assists for a five-point night.
Frankie McCarthy made five saves for the Mount in the game while UMBC goalkeeper Ruston Souder made 10 stops. The Mount held a 31-30 advantage in shots and a 38-28 edge in ground balls.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Saturday, April 16, when Hobart visits Waldron Family Stadium for a Northeast Conference matchup. The game starts at noon.
