Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 5, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse edged Furman 10-8 in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. Freshman Chris DiPretoro led the charge with a career-high four points on three goals and one assist.
DiPretoro registered two of his three scores in the second half as the rookie followed up his three-goal performance at Georgetown with another hat trick on Saturday. Justin Gosnell, Mike Moynihan and Mark Hojnoski tallied two goals apiece to help pace the Mountaineers.
Jonah Moore notched a team-high three points (2g, 1a) and David Williamson added a pair of goals to lead the way for Furman.
Matt Vierheller earned his second win in cage for the Mount, stopping 11 of 19 shots on goal, while Reilly McDermott took the loss for Furman despite making 11 saves.
The Mount tallied two goals in the final three minutes of the first period as DiPretoro and Gosnell found the back of the net to give the Mountaineers a one-goal lead. After a Zach Scott tally to open the second evened the score at 2-2, Hojnoski registered back-to-back goals in a span of 26 seconds to put the Mount back ahead. Moore netted the final goal of the half for Furman to cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into halftime.
Following an even third quarter that saw both teams register three goals apiece, the Mount came out firing in the fourth, scoring the opening three goals in just under nine minutes of play. Moynihan, Jack Mangan and DiPretoro notched the goals for the Mount to give the team its biggest lead of the contest, 10-6.
Furman responded with goals from Matthew VanGalen and Williamson in the ensuing four minutes, but the Mount was able to hold off the Paladins in the final minute-plus to grab the 10-8 win.
The Mountaineers are back in action for a contest with VMI on Saturday, March 12 at 12 p.m.
