Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (September 13, 2015)--Freshman Jenna West (Manheim, Pa.) scored a pair of goals as the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team downed UMBC, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in the Battle of Baltimore held at the Mount's Waldron Family Stadium. Fellow freshman Kirsten O'Malley (Mountoursville, Pa.) also scored for the Mount in the win.
West put the Mount (1-7) ahead just 5:54 into the game with her second goal of the season. West was able to turn in the box after a feed from Emma Blair (Shillington, Pa.) and beat UMBC goalkeeper McKenzie Krinetz to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage.
The Mountaineers stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute when West scored her second goal of the game. Sam Manson (Wall, N.J.) started the play with a through ball to the middle. Freshman Nikki Pinto (West Deptford, N.J.) was able to beat the defender and get a touch on the ball that deflected off the keeper at the top of the box. West corraled the ball and put home the shot into the empty net.
O'Malley scored in the 87th minute to round out the scoring. O'Malley collected a pretty cross from senior Kelsey Pressler (Holland, Pa.), and calmly buried the shot for her first career goal.
The Mount defense provided its best effort of the season, holding UMBC to nine shots in the game, including just one on goal. Redshirt freshman Quinn Costello-Mays (Woodbridge, Va.) and senior Rachel Bourne (Baltimore, Md.) combined for the shutout. Bourne made the Mount's lone save in the game.
The Mount and UMBC each had nine shots in the game, but the Mountaineers held a 6-to-1 advantage in shots on goal. UMBC had nine corner kicks to the Mount's four in the contest. Jen Nance made a pair of saves while allowing a goal in the second half for UMBC while Krinetz had one save in the opening half for the Retrievers.
West and senior defender Nicole Vallely (Reading, Pa.) each earned a spot on the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament team. Towson defeated Loyola, 1-0, in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader to finish the tournament with a 2-0 record. The Mount and Loyola each went 1-1 while UMBC was 0-2.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, September 20, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Howard.
