Box Score Greenville, S.C. (March 7, 2015)—Clayton Wainer (Del Rio, Texas) scored with 2:05 remaining to lift Mount St. Mary's to a 7-6 win over Furman on Saturday afternoon. Mount goalkeeper Matt Vierheller (Forest Hill, Md.) made 14 saves in the victory.
With the score tied at 6-6, Wainer took a pass from Ryan Lamon (Severna Park, Md.) and ripped the shot past Furman goalkeeper Reilly McDermott to give the Mount the lead.
The Mount (2-3) won the ensuing face-off, but turned the ball over, giving the Paladins a chance to tie. Vierheller came up with a save, and Kyle O'Brien (Arnold, Md.) forced a turnover with 1:41 left to give the Mount the ball back. The Mount maintained possession the rest of the way to earn the win.
The game was nip-and-tuck throughout as neither team led by more than one goal. Spencer Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave the Mount an early lead before Furman's Jonah Moore evened the score. Justin Gosnell (Aberdeen, Md.) scored the first of his two goals in the game for a 2-1 lead, but Moore countered again to even the score after one quarter.
Robbie Betchley gave Furman a 3-2 advantage before Gosnell's second score of the game tied it at 3-3. Robert Jones (Riva, Md.) scored on a pass from Gosnell to give the Mount a 4-3 advantage, but Moore's third goal of the half tied the game at 4-4.
The Paladins (1-5) grabbed a 5-4 advantage on a Michael Toto goal with 5:17 left in the third quarter. Mount St. Mary's again tied the score, this time on a Bubba Johnson (Wyoming, Del.) goal with 1:49 left in the third.
The Mount grabbed a 6-5 lead 37 seconds into the final quarter on an Evan Gormley (Mentor, Ohio) goal before Furman knotted the score at 6-6 on a Patrick DiMento extra-man goal with 6:49 on the clock.
Gosnell was the lone Mount player with a multiple-point game, finishing with two goals and an assist. O'Brien had a solid game on the defensive end with two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Vierheller made 14 saves in the victory, giving him double figures in saves in each of his four starts this season.
Each team had 31 shots in the game while Furman held a 19-to-18 edge in ground balls. The Paladins won 10-of-17 face-offs.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, March 11, with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Richmond.
