Box Score Baltimore, Md. (March 24, 2015)—Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse lost to UMBC, 11-8, in a non-conference matchup at UMBC Stadium on Tuesday night. Justin Gosnell (Aberdeen, Md.) led the Mount with a hat trick in the loss.
UMBC (3-5) took the early lead on a Jack Gannon goal three minutes into the game. The Mount responded with back-to-back tallies to grab a 2-1 advantage. Gosnell's first goal of the game evened the score with 7:55 left in the first quarter, and Will Hendrick (Lancaster, Pa.) gave the Mount a 2-1 lead with his first collegiate goal a little over two minutes later.
The Retrievers answered with a three-goal flurry late in the first quarter for a 4-2 advantage. Drew Borsody started the run at the 3:09 mark, with Mark Monroe scoring an extra-man goal 49 seconds later to give UMBC a 3-2 lead. Gannon's second goal of the game pushed the margin to 4-2 after one quarter of play.
Mount St. Mary's (2-6) scored twice in the second quarter on goals by Evan Gormley (Mentor, Ohio) and Mark Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) to tie the game at the half.
UMBC took control of the game by scoring four times in the third quarter. Connor Finch snapped the 4-4 tie 1:38 into the second half to give UMBC a 5-4 lead. Another three-goal flurry later in the quarter pushed the advantage to four goals. Nate Lewnes, Gannon and Pat Young scored in a span of 2:09 to make it an 8-4 game.
The Mount fought back with consecutive goals to start the final quarter. Gosnell's second score of the contest made it 8-5, and Bubba Johnson (Wyoming, Del.) converted a UMBC turnover to make it 8-6 with 10:41 remaining. UMBC countered with goals Kevin McDonough and Young to make it 10-6 with just under four minutes left. Gormley's second goal of the game for the Mount with 1:34 left cut the deficit to 10-7, but Lewnes answered for UMBC with 27 seconds left. The Mount's Gosnell completed his hat trick with 15 seconds left to round out the scoring.
Gosnell had three goals and Gormley two to lead the Mount offense. Johnson added a goal and two assists for the Mountaineers. Goalkeeper Matt Vierheller (Forest Hill, Md.) made four saves in the game while Kyle O'Brien (Arnold, Md.) had two caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Gannon led UMBC with three goals and an assist while Young and Lewnes added two goals each. Goalkeeper Ruston Souder made 11 saves in the win.
The Mount held a 32-to-28 advantage in shots and a 27-to-26 edge in ground balls. UMBC won 11-of-21 face-offs, and was 2-for-3 with a man advantage.
The Mount hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday, March 28th, in a Northeast Conference matchup at Waldron Family Stadium at 12:00 p.m.
