MOUNT UPDATE: Mount St. Mary's lost to Wagner, 6-5, in overtime on Saturday to fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast Conference. The Seahawks scored with 6:32 left in the fourth quarter to force overtime, and won the game on a Paul DeVita goal 1:31 into the overtime period. Mount goalkeeper Matt Vierheller made 11 saves while five different Mountaineers scored in the game. Justin Gosnell led the offense with a goal and an assist. Mark Hojnoski, Ryan Lamon, Bubba Johnson and Clayton Wainer also had goals in the loss. The Mount was outshot 34-27 in the game, including 14-to-2 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
ABOUT UMBC: UMBC fell to Stony Brook, 12-6, on Saturday and enters the matchup with a 2-5 overall record and an 0-2 mark in the America East Conference. Pat Young leads the Retrievers with 14 points (8g, 6a) while Nate Lewnes has scored a team-best 13 goals. Jack Gannon also has double figures in points 12 (7g, 5a). Connor Gordon has a 9.44 goals against average and a .509 save percentage in goal. UMBC is averaging 6.00 goals per game and has won 31.9 percent of their face-offs this season.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: UMBC holds a 21-0 lead in the all-time series with the Mount that began in 1974. The Mountaineers are 0-16 all-time against the Retrievers since moving to NCAA Division I in 1989. The teams have met in each of the past two seasons with UMBC winning 10-8 at home in 2013 and 17-7 last year at the Mount's Waldron Family Stadium.
IN THE CAGE: Freshman Matt Vierheller continues to shine in his first season for the Mountaineers. Vierheller leads the Northeast Conference in goals against average (7.63), save percentage (.617) and saves per game (12.33). He has recorded double figures in saves five of six starts, including a season-best 17 saves in the Mount's 7-4 loss to No. 15 Towson. Vierheller made 14 saves. He has a 6.61 goals against average over the past three games. Vierheller is third in the nation in save percentage (.617) and eighth in goals against (7.63).
BALANCED SCORING: Thirteen different players have scored for the Mount this season, with 10 scoring two or more goals. Bubba Johnson and Justin Gosnell are tied for the team lead with seven goals each.
GOSNELL CONTRIBUTING: Junior Justin Gosnell, in his first season with the Mountaineers, has acclimated himself to the Mount lineup, posting seven goals and two assist over the past five games. Gosnell has five goals and two assists over the past three games.
O'BRIEN HAS CAREER DAY VS. WAGNER: Senior Kyle O'Brien had a standout day on defense against Wagner with career highs of seven caused turnovers and seven ground balls. The seven caused turnovers are the most by a Mount player since Phil Thomas had five on April 14, 2007, against Manhattan. O'Brien is third in the nation with 2.57 caused turnovers per game.
HALEY HAS BANNER DAY ON FACE-OFFS: Nick Haley won 15-of-19 face-offs in the Mount's 8-7 loss to Richmond. The senior won all eight face-offs in the second half, while matching a career-high with 10 ground balls. Haley's 15 face-off wins were a career high as well.
MOYNIHAN NAMED NEC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Mount St. Mary's freshman Mike Moynihan started the season off with a bang, recording a hat trick in the Mount's 11-8 season-opening win at VMI. Moynihan was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, becoming the first Mountaineer to earn the honor since Braedon Graham on Feb. 27, 2012.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Mike Daly, Nick Firman and Braedon Graham will serve as team captains for the Mountaineers this season.
EXPERIENCE ON DEFENSE: The Mount's trio of senior starters on defense includes Nick Firman, Kyle O'Brien and Alex Stefkovich. This season, O'Brien leads the Mount with 18 caused turnovers, Firman has 16 ground balls, and Stefkovich 10 ground balls. The three have combined for 42 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers in the Mount's six games this season. The three combined for 90 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers last season.
PRESEASON POLLS: Mount St. Mary's has been picked to finish in sixth place in the annual Northeast Conference preseason coaches' poll, released Tuesday. Three-time defending NEC Tournament champion Bryant was picked to finish in first place, followed by Saint Joseph's, Hobart, Sacred Heart, Robert Morris, the Mount and Wagner.
