Box Score Staten Island, N.Y.--Mount St. Mary's was edged by Wagner, 6-5, in overtime in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams. Matt Vierheller made 11 saves for the Mount in the loss.
Wagner's Paul DeVita scored with 2:29 left in the first overtime to lift the Seahawks to the win. Five different Mount players scored in the game while Kyle O'Brien had seven caused turnovers.
Wagner (3-4, 1-0 NEC) took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on goals by Andrew Streilein and Patrick McMenamin.
The Mountaineers (2-5, 0-1 NEC) rebounded by scoring the first three goals of the second quarter to take the lead. Bubba Johnson scored 36 seconds into the quarter to cut the Wagner advantage in half. Justin Gosnell evened the score just under two minutes later.
Mount St. Mary's took its first lead when Mark Hojnoski converted a pass from Brent Tsang with 4:52 left in the first half. Wagner was able to even the score at the break with an extra-man goal from Billy Battaglia with 1:18 on the clock.
The Mount regained the lead with a Clayton Wainer extra man goal early in the fourth quarter, but Streilein's second goal of the game knotted the score at 4-4 with 6:15 left in the third. The Mount answered with a Ryan Lamon tally with 2:26 left in the quarter to grab a 5-4 lead heading into the final quarter.
Wagner's DeVita proved to be the difference maker, tying the game with an unassisted goal with 6:32 left in regulation before scoring the game-winner in overtime.
Gosnell was the only Mount player with multiple points, finishing with a goal and an assist in the game. O'Brien finished with a team-high seven ground balls in addition to his career-best seven caused turnovers.
Wagner outshot the Mount 34-27 in the game, including a 14-to-2 margin in the fourth quarter and overtime. Wagner also held a narrow 28-27 edge in ground balls while winning 9-of-15 face-offs in the game.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, March 24, with a 7:00 matchup at UMBC.
