Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 11, 2015)--Mount St. Mary's was edged by Richmond, 8-7, in men's lacrosse action at Waldron Family Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Mark Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) had two goals and an assist to pace the Mount in the game.
Trailing 8-5 with just over 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Mount rallied. Hojnoski found Bubba Johnson (Wyoming, Del.) wide open in front of the cage, and Johnson converted the shot to make it 8-6 with 9:37 remaining. Hojnoski then cut the gap to 8-7 with a nice move to the cage just over a minute later.
The Mountaineers had several chances to even the score, but Richmond goalkeeper Benny Pugh came up with three saves in the final seven minutes to preserve the win. The final save came with 1:02 remaining on a Spencer Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz.) shot.
Richmond scored just over a minute into the game to take a 1-0 lead before the Mount (2-4) took lead lead on goals from Evan Gormley (Mentor, Ohio) and Justin Gosnell (Aberdeen, Md.). The Spiders answered with a three-goal run over a span of 1:41 to grab a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.
Mount St. Mary's evened the score early in the second quarter with a pair of goals just seven seconds apart. Hojnoski's first goal of the game cut the Richmond lead to 4-3, and Nick Haley (Ferndale, Md.) won the ensuing face-off, grabbed the ground ball, and scored on on a breakaway to make it a 4-4 game. Forester's second goal of the game gave Richmond a 5-4 lead at the half.
The Spiders opened the scoring in the third quarter on a Mitch Goldberg goal, but the Mount countered with Gosnell's second goal of the game 48 seconds later to make it 6-5. Richmond's Alex Hatem pushed the advantage to 7-5, and Forester completed a hat trick 2:45 into the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to three.
Haley dominated on face-offs for the Mount, winning all eight in the second hafl, and 15-of-19 in the game. He matched a career-high with 10 ground balls in addition to scoring his second career goal. Matt Vierheller (Forest Hill, Md.) made nine saves for the Mount while Kyle O'Brien (Arnold, Md.) had a pair of caused turnovers.
Hojnoski led the offense with three points (2g, 1a) while Gosnell added a pair of goals. Forester had three goals and an assist for the Spiders while Goldberg and Eric Haehl added a goal and an assist each. Pugh made 15 saves in the victory.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday March 21, with the Northeast Conference opener at Wagner.
