Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (February 27, 2015) – Freshman goalkeeper Matt Vierheller (Forest Hill, Md.) made 17 saves in just his second career start in the Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team's 7-4 loss to No. 15 Towson on Friday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
The Mount (1-2) and Towson (3-1) were tied at 3-3 in the third quarter before the Tigers scored twice in the final 2:29 of the quarter to steal the momentum. Towson went on to outscore the Mount, 2-1, in the final 15 minutes to earn a hard-fought road win.
For the Mount, which was outshot by a 44-22 margin, the seven goals allowed were the fewest on the season, while the 17 saves for Vierheller were the most for a Mount goalkeeper since Chris Klaiber's 19-save effort last season versus Johns Hopkins on April 14.
Offensively, junior transfer Justin Gosnell (Aberdeen, Md.) scored the first two goals of his Mount St. Mary's career with Bubba Johnson (Wyoming, Del.) and Evan Gormley (Mentor, Ohio) adding to the Mount's goal total on the day.
Johnson gave the Mount a 1-0 advantage in the first minute of the game when he swooped in front of the cage from the left side and beat Towson goalkeeper Tyler White, who finished with nine saves in the game.
Towson was able to knot the score at 1-1 on the first of Joe Seider's team-leading three goals off a feed from Andrew Hodgson with 4:51 left in the opening quarter.
The Mount regained the lead as Gosnell split a pair of defenders before getting his hands free for his first goal in a Mount uniform with 11:28 remaining before halftime. Just over three minutes later however, Towson picked up the equalizer off the stick of Spencer Parks from another Hodgson assist to level the score at 2-2 heading into halftime.
Out of the half, Parks found the back of the net for the second time of the afternoon for a 3-2 advantage for the visitors. The Mount answered back to pull even when Gormley beat two defenders and fired home a shot from the left side with 3:32 to go in the third.
The Tigers took control of the game with goals from Seider and Hodgson in the closing 2:29 of the quarter for a 5-3 lead.
The Towson edge grew to 6-3 on Ryan Drenner's goal early in the fourth quarter, but the Mount was able to cut into the advantage when Gosnell sent the ball toward the net and had it deflect off a Towson defender and in with 3:16 remaining. Seider completed his hat trick for the Tigers with a strike with 1:42 left.
Towson finished with 33 ground balls to the Mount's 26 and turned the Mountaineers over 18 times on the day.
Vierheller led the Mount with five ground balls on the day with Nick Haley (Ferndale, Md.) adding three off of three face-off wins.
The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, March 4, for a home game versus Georgetown at 4 p.m.
