Box Score Philadelphia (April 1, 2014) – A spirited second-half comeback by the Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team fell short as Saint Joseph's handed the Mount a 10-5 road loss on Tuesday night at Sweeney Field in Northeast Conference action. Clayton Wainer notched two goals to pace the Mount's offense on the night.
The Mount (0-11, 0-3 NEC) trailed the Hawks (7-3, 3-0 NEC) by a score of 8-1 entering the fourth quarter. Four-consecutive goals from the Mountaineers trimmed the home team's lead down to 8-5 with 8:45 remaining, but the Mount could not complete the comeback as Saint Joseph's tallied the game's final two goals to pull away.
The Hawks had the better of the play in the early going and claimed a 7-0 lead with 7:08 left in the third quarter.
Saint Joseph's got on the board first on a strike from Johnny Simanski that sailed over Frankie McCarthy's shoulder and into the net with 11:24 remaining in the first quarter. Making his second start of the season, McCarthy recorded 14 saves, including five apiece in the first and third quarters.
Ryan McGee, who scored a game-high four goals, made it 2-0 in favor of the home side with a goal with 1:48 remaining on the first quarter clock. In the second quarter, Ray Vandegrift's goal pushed the Hawks' advantage to 3-0, and after a quick move to avoid a defender, Josh Cavanaugh found an open Richard Gabelman who made it 4-0 heading into halftime.
Three goals in a row following the break made it 7-0 in favor of Saint Joseph's.
The Mountaineers broke through with their first goal with 5:01 remaining in the third quarter. A spin move helped Wainer get his hands free for a long-range shot that beat the Saint Joseph's goalkeeper, Dustin Keen, to cut the Mount's deficit to 7-1. Keen stopped nine Mount shots in the game.
In the beginning of the fourth, Mike Fields navigated past two defenders to find the back of the net from the left side to put the score at 8-2 and spark a 4-0 run for the Mount.
With just under ten minutes remaining, Christian Durham scored from point blank range on an extra man opportunity, and Evan Gormley followed with a goal of his own from the left side to cut the Hawks' lead to 8-4 just 33 seconds later.
After another Saint Joseph's penalty, Wainer ripped a shot through traffic from the top of the box off a feed from Ryan Hibbs with 8:45 showing on the clock for an 8-5 deficit. That was as close as the Mount would get, however, as Simanski and McGee both scored in the final 1:20 to put the game away.
The Hawks outshot the Mount, 37-23, and held a 27-22 edge on ground balls.
Next on the schedule, the Mount continues its road swing at Bucknell on Saturday, April 5, at 4 p.m.
