FINAL RESULTS
Landover, Md. (February 9, 2014) – Jessica Whitmore won the 60m dash to help the Mount St. Mary's women's track team earn fifth place at the Northeast Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday, and Julian Woods claimed the individual 60m hurdles title to pace the Mount to a fifth place finish on the men's side at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The women's team finished the two-day competition with 71.5 points, while the men capped the championships with 64.5 points. In the women's competition, Sacred Heart (136 points) took the team championship, followed by LIU Brooklyn (102), Robert Morris (95), Saint Francis U (94), the Mount (71.5), Wagner (60.5), Central Connecticut (48), FDU (21), Bryant (17) and St. Francis Brooklyn (17). The men's championship was won by LIU Brooklyn with 125 points. Sacred Heart (108.5) took second followed by Central Connecticut (102), Wagner (71.5) and the Mount (64.5). Saint Francis U (62.5), Robert Morris (56), FDU (51), Bryant (16) and St. Francis Brooklyn (6) rounded out the field.
Whitmore edged Saint Francis U's Brittany Johnson by .02 seconds to take the individual title in the 60m with a time of 7.61. The time, which is the second-best of her Mount career, surpasses the ECAC qualifying time of 7.68.
Competing in his first NEC Championships, Woods won the 60m hurdles with a personal record time of 8.19 to qualify for the IC4A Championships in early March. It is also the fourth-best time in school history for the event. Woods' previous collegiate best time was 8.26 set at the Bucknell Gulden Invitational on Jan. 25.
The top field finisher on the day for the Mount, Ali Donahue placed second in the weight throw with a toss that sailed 13.43m (44' 0.75").
Helena Leyrer, Genamarie McCant and Maria Borland all finished in the top eight twice on Sunday to earn points for the Mountaineers. Leyrer's 60m hurdles time of 9.05 was good for fifth in the finals, while her 59.97 finish in the 400m earned seventh. McCant's 500m finish of 1:17.21 placed her third, and she took fifth in the 200m in 25.54. Borland took third in the 800m, clocking in at 2:17.71. In the mile, she was more than eight seconds better than her previous best at the Mount in 5:05.04 to finish fourth.
Maria Borland's twin sister, Stephanie Borland crossed the finish line right after Maria in the mile in 5:06.33 for fifth place.
A day after taking sixth in the 10,000m, Kristen Galligan turned in a third-place finish in Sunday's 5,000m in 17:26.32. Setting a new career best, Corie Scharpf cleared the high jump bar at 1.64m (5' 3.25") to take fifth at the championships.
In the 4x400m relay, the Mount put together a fifth-place finish in 3:59.81.
On the men's side, in addition to Woods' win in the 60m hurdles, the freshman standout had a strong performance in the 400m, earning fifth with a time of 50.19.
Josh Poole was the third finisher in the 500m in 1:05.55, which was a personal record for the freshman.
Joe Cuntrera tied for sixth overall in the pole vault, clearing 4.20m (13' 9.25"), and Tommy Gruschow also placed sixth in the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:20.21.
Coby Rosemier-Gussio tied the qualifying time for the IC4A Championships in 6.98 in the 60m dash to take fourth. The time matches his career best in the event set in 2012 and equaled at the George Mason Patriot Games earlier this month.
Kody Wilson and Christopher Eltringham earned points in the 800m run on the day. Wilson finished just over one second behind the winner with a time of 1:55.50 to take third, while Eltringham's 1:57.39 finish was good for seventh.
The Mount's distance medley relay squad took third in 10:31.99, and the 4x400m relay was fourth with a time of 3:22.63.
