Mount St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Drops 10-4 Decision at Georgetown

Washington, D.C. (February 12, 2014) – The strong defensive effort by the Mount men's lacrosse team that included a career-high 20 saves from goalkeeper Chris Klaiber was not enough in a 10-4 loss at Georgetown on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Field.

Three different players scored for the Mount (0-2), with Clayton Wainer registering two to go with one apiece from Greg Mulvaney and Christian Durham. Durham also led the Mount with five ground balls. For the Hoyas (1-0) playing in their season opener, Charles McCormick scored three goals, while Peter Conley and Anthony Heaton netted two apiece.

The Mount's defense held strong through the first quarter, allowing just one goal on 13 Georgetown shots. Klaiber made five early saves to keep the Mountaineers within one through 15 minutes.

The game opened up with seven second-quarter goals, including two for the Mount. After Georgetown extended its advantage to 2-0, Wainer notched his first goal of the game with just over five minutes gone in the second quarter to cut Mount's deficit to 2-1. Later in the quarter, Durham found the back of the net for his first goal of the season before Georgetown rattled off three tallies in the final 4:13 of the quarter for a 6-2 halftime lead.

Klaiber made 13 first-half saves as Georgetown outshot the Mount, 30-8, through 30 minutes.

The Mountaineers held the Hoyas off the board until 7:45 remaining in the third quarter. The Hoyas led by six at 8-2 before Mulvaney placed a bounce shot to the top corner for his first career goal.

The final goal of the game for the visiting Mountaineers came on an extra-man opportunity in the fourth quarter. From behind the cage, Ryan Lamon found Wainer all alone in front of the goal for his second score of the game.

Conley found the back of the net twice for Georgetown in the final seven minutes to put the game out of reach. 

Nick Haley won 7-of-18 faceoffs and picked up four ground balls. Bubba Johnson, who took four shots, led the Mount with two caused turnovers. Georgetown secured 43 ground balls to the Mount's 36, and the Mountaineers went 15-of-20 on clear attempts. 

The Mount was outshot, 46-22, on the day. 

The Mount looks to respond with a Feb. 22 game at Delaware. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

NOTES: Greg Mulvaney scored his first career goal for the Mount… The Mount holds a 16-15 lead over Georgetown in the all-time series.
