MOUNT UPDATE: The Mountaineers opened the 2014 season with a 16-3 loss at No. 6 Maryland on Saturday. The Mount had a trio of players score their first collegiate goals in the loss. Sophomores Robert Jones and Bubba Johnson, who each sat out last year, scored along with freshman Ryan Lamon. Jones led the Mount with a goal and an assist in the loss. In goal, Chris Klaiber started, making seven saves while allowing eight goals in 19:08 of action. Frankie McCarthy played the rest of the way, also making seven saves with eight goals allowed. Junior Nick Haley won 9-of-20 face-offs while Tommy Lyons and Brett Shukri each had a team-high three ground balls.
ABOUT THE HOYAS: Georgetown finished 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the Big East Conference last year, falling to Villanova, 15-12, in the Big East Semifinals. Reilly O'Connor, a preseason All-Big East selection, is the top returnee on attack after posting 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points last year. Jeff Fountain (16g, 8a) is also back for the Hoyas while preseason All-Big East selection Charles McCormick (19g, 8a) is the top returnee in the midfield. Face-off specialist Tyler Knarr, who won 62 percent of his face-offs last year, is also a preseason All-Big East selection for the Hoyas.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The Mount broke a 14-game losing streak to the Hoyas with a 14-6 home win last season. Overall, the Mountaineers hold a 16-14 lead in the all-time series, but the Mountaineers are 5-14 against Georgetown since the move to NCAA Division I in 1989. Two years ago, Georgetown scored all four goals in the fourth quarter to rally for a 9-8 victory.
LAST YEAR'S GAME: Andrew Scalley scored six goals to lead the Mount to a 14-6 win over Georgetown at Waldron Family Stadium last year. Scalley finished with nine points in the win. Cody Lehrer and Eric Ososki each added two goals for the Mount, which raced to a 10-3 lead at the half. Jeff Fountain and Brian Casey each scored twice for the Hoyas while Jake Haley made nine saves in the cage. For the Mount, Adam Borgogelli made six saves while Jon Marsalese won 12-of-23 face-offs while grabbing eight ground balls.
NEW LOOK LINEUP: The Mountaineers had plenty of new faces in the starting lineup at Maryland. The entire starting attack (Matt Yates, Bubba Johnson and Ryan Lamon) and the entire starting midfield (Robert Jones, Evan Gormley, Clayton Wainer) were comprised of players making their first collegiate starts. In addition, defenseman Nick Firman made his first career start.
FIRST GOALS: The Mount's had three players score their first collegiate goal at Maryland. Robert Jones, Bubba Johnson and Ryan Lamon each found the back of the net for their first career tallies in the game.
THE SCHEDULE: The Mount once again will face a challenging non-conference schedule. The Mount plays three teams ranked in the top 20 in the USILA Preseason Poll (#6 Maryland, #7 Virginia, #11 Johns Hopkins) and will face two others receiving votes (Towson, Drexel).
THE MOUNT vs. RANKED OPPONENTS: Mount St. Mary's is 5-50 all-time against ranked opponents since moving to NCAA Division I in 1988-89. However, the Mountaineers are 5-11 against ranked opponents since 2010. Last year, the Mount defeated #18 Bucknell at home, 12-11, while falling at #2 Maryland (23-6), #6 Virginia (18-11) and #6 Johns Hopkins (19-9).
PRESEASON POLL: The Mount was tabbed to finish in sixth place in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Poll. Defending champion Bryant was picked to finish first with Robert Morris and Hobart in a tie for second. Saint Joseph's, Sacred Heart, the Mount and Wagner round out the poll.
THE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE: The Mountaineers are in the Northeast Conference, which will be in its fourth season of play. The NEC has a new look this year as Hobart and Saint Joseph's join the league, which includes the Mount, Bryant, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart and Wagner. Mount St. Mary's won the inaugural NEC title in 2011, while Bryant has won the league the past two years.
