Men's Lacrosse Loses at No. 19 Bryant, 17-9

Smithfield, R.I. (April 7, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's lost at No. 19 Bryant, 17-9, in Northeast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  Christian Kellett paced the Mount with three goals in the game.

The Bulldogs (9-2, 2-0 NEC) took the early lead with a pair of goals in the opening 4:04 of the contest.  Colin Dunster and Peter McMahon scored the early tallies to give Bryant the lead.  The Mount's Andrew Scalley cut the deficit in half with his 12th goal of the year, but McMahon answered to make it 3-1.  Kellett, however, scored just 18 seconds later to make it a 3-2 game after one quarter of play.

Bryant took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring six times for a 9-5 halftime lead.  The Bulldogs outshot the Mount, 20-4, in the period.  Travis Harrington, Dunster, Brian Schlansker and Alex Zomerfeld each scored to give Bryant a 7-2 lead midway through the quarter.  Brett Schmidt stopped the scoring streak with his team-leading 19th goal of the year for the Mount, but Dan Sipperly responded for an 8-3 Bryant lead.

The Mount cut into the deficit with Kellett's second goal of the game and Bryant Schmidt scored an extra-man goal with 2:02 left in the half to make the score 8-5.  Harrington, however, scored with 26 seconds left in the half to give Bryant a 9-5 lead.

Zomerfeld and Kellett exchanged goals early in the third quarter and Dunster's third goal of the game with 42 seconds left in the third pushed Bryant's lead to 11-6.

Robert Owen scored 10 seconds into the final quarter to make the score 11-7, but Bryant scored five of the next six goals to seal the victory.

Kellett led the Mount with his three-goal game while Bryant Schmidt and Scalley each had two goals and an assist in the loss.  Brett Schmidt chipped in a goal and two assists while Owen added a goal and an assist for the Mountaineers.

Dunster had four goals and an assist to pace Bryant while McMahon tallied two goals and six assists for an eight-point day.  Bo Redpath and Max Weisenberg each had three assists while Sipperly (2g, 1a), Zomerfeld, Schlansker and Harrington all had two goals in the win.

Bryant outshot the Mount (3-6, 0-2 NEC) 52-28 in the game while holding a 41-18 advantage in ground balls.  Chris Klaiber made 10 saves in the loss with Jameson Love making eight saves for Bryant.

The game was a rematch of last year's NEC semifinal game that the Mount won, 14-9.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday, April 14, with a 4:00 p.m. game at Robert Morris.
