Box Score Towson, Md. (March 3, 2012)—Towson scored three consecutive goals late in the fourth quarter to earn a 10-8 win over Mount St. Mary's in men's lacrosse action at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Senior Bryant Schmidt paced the Mount with a career-high four goals.
Andrew Scalley scored with just over nine minutes remaining to cap a four-goal run to give the Mountaineers an 8-7 advantage. Towson, however, responded by scoring three goals in a span of 2:17 to earn the victory.
Matt Lamon started the decisive run when he converted a Robby Zoppo pass with 5:13 left in the fourth to tie the score at 8-8. Matt Hughes gave the Tigers the lead with a score with four minutes left and Thomas DeNapoli stretched the advantage to two goals with his third goal of the game with 2:56 left.
The Mount held a 34-24 advantage in shots on the day, but Towson goalkeepers Travis Love and Andrew Wascavage combined to make 12 saves in the game. The Mount won 12-of-19 face-offs in the contest, but Towson managed a 32-to-26 edge in ground balls.
Bryant Schmidt's four-goal game led the offense while Brett Schmidt and Scalley each had a pair of goals in the game. Scalley added an assist for a three-point game while Daniel Stranix chipped in a career-best three assists in the loss. Chris Klaiber made seven saves for the Mountaineers.
DeNapoli led Towson with three goals with Lamon and Sean Maguire chipping in two goals each.
In the third quarter, Towson struck for a pair of quick scores from Maguire and Michael Brashears to make the score 7-4. The Mount had possession for the first three minutes of the quarter, but could not convert on any of its five shots.
Bryant Schmidt stopped a the Towson run midway through the third quarter when he rifled a low shot past Andrew Wascavage to cut the deficit to 7-5. It was Schmidt's third goal of the game with Stranix picking up the assist.
Brett Schmidt followed with his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to 7-6 and Bryant Schmidt made it a 3-0 run for the Mount with his fourth goal of the game to tie the score with 2:11 left in the third quarter.
In the opening half, the Mount struck first on a goal from Bryant Schmidt just under two minutes into the game. Towson evened the score on Maguire's extra-man goal and then took the lead on a Lamon tally to make it 2-1 after the first quarter.
Brett Schmidt sent a shot off the post early in the second quarter and the Mount then took a penalty, and DeNapoli struck for Towson's second extra-man goal of the game to make it 3-1 Towson.
The Mount then erupted for three goals in a span of 1:19 to take a 4-3 lead. Bryant Schmidt started the run with an extra-man goal with 11:24 left in the second quarter.
Brett Schmidt continued the hot streak when he converted a shot high on a feed from Scalley. That goal kept a pair of impressive Mount streaks alive as Schmidt now has scored a goal in 16 consecutive games while Scalley's consecutive games with a point streak moves to 35.
Scalley made it three goals in 1:19 when he came around the cage and buried the shot for a 4-3 Mount lead with 10:05 left in the second quarter. DeNapoli answered with his second goal to even the and Towson took a 5-4 halftime lead on an Andrew Hodgson goal.
Towson held a 15-to-14 advantage in shots in the opening half with Klaiber making five saves for the Mount and Travis Love seven for the Tigers.
The Mount returns to action next Saturday, March 10, when VMI visits Waldron Family Stadium on campus for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
