Emmitsburg, Md. (February 28, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's lost to No. 1 Virginia, 17-5, on Tuesday afternoon in men's lacrosse action at Waldron Family Stadium.  Daniel Stranix and Brett Schmidt each had two goals to pace the Mount in the game.

The day belonged to Virginia's Chris Bocklet as the senior matched a career high with six goals while adding an assist for a seven-point day.  Ryan Tucker added a hat trick in the game with Steele Stanwick and Rob Emery chipping in two goals and two assists each.  Owen Van Arsdale tallied a game-high three assists while Matt White added two assists for the Cavaliers.

Stranix finished the day with two goals and an assist for the Mount (1-1).  Brett Schmidt added a pair of goals with twin brother Bryant Schmidt also scoring in the loss.

Bocklet opened the scoring with an extra-man goal 1:56 into the game to give Virginia (4-0) the early lead.  Stranix countered for the Mount just over four minutes into the game to tie the score at 1-1, but the Cavaliers took control by scoring the next nine goals in the game.

Emery scored twice with Bocklet and Tucker also scoring to close out the first quarter with Virginia holding a 5-1 advantage.  Bocklet and Stanwick then combined for all five goals to start the second quarter for the Cavaliers to stretch the lead to 10-1.  Brett Schmidt's first goal of the game cut the deficit to 10-2, but Colin Briggs rounded out the scoring in the half for Virginia to make the score 11-2 at the half.

Chris Klaiber made 11 saves in 50:12 of action for the Mountaineers while Kevin Hess added a save in the final 9:48 of the game.  Rob Fortunato made six saves while allowing three goals in 43:32 of playing time for the Cavaliers in the cage.

Virginia outshot the Mount, 42-31, in the game while holding a commanding 38-21 advantage in ground balls.  The Cavaliers won 17-of-26 face-offs in the contest while forcing the Mountaineers into 20 turnovers.

The Mount kept a pair of streaks alive in the game as Brett Schmidt's two-goal game extended his streak of consecutive games with a goal to 15.  In addition, Andrew Scalley's assist on Schmidt's second goal extends his consecutive games with a point streak to 34 games.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, March 3, with a 1:00 p.m. game at Towson.
