Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (September 30, 2011)--Senior Sadie Winship scored midway throught the second half to propel the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Long Island on Friday night.
Winship's game-winning goal came on a nice combination passing play in the 68th minute of the game. Mary McCarron took a nice touch from Ragan Cote and fed the ball to Winship, who was able to break past the Long Island defense with a defender closing fast on her heels.
Winship, however, was able to hold off the defender and rifle a shot from 18 yards out to lift the Mount to the win.
From there, the Mount defense held strong in the 1-0 victory. Goalkeeper Alicia Miller had an outstanding game, making 10 saves to pick up her second consecutive shutout. Miller tied Anna Lebo for the school record with her 10th career shutout.
Long Island held a 19-to-5 advantage in shots in the game, but the Mount had a 6-to-5 edge in corner kicks.
It was the Mount's first win in a Northeast Conference opener since a 1-0 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) in 2002. It was also the Mount's first win at home this season in five games.
Winship, who has two game-winning goals this year, moved into ninth place on the Mount's all-time goal list with her 11th career goal.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday when Wagner visits for a noon kick-off.
