Box Score New Rochelle, N.Y. (September 25, 2011)—Ragan Cote and Kelly Baker scored first half goals to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 2-1 win at Iona on Sunday afternoon.
Cote got the scoring started when she nailed a shot into the top corner of the goal to give the Mount (2-4-1) a 1-0 advantage 8:19 into the game.
Baker added to the Mount's lead when she converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute to push the lead to a pair of goals.
Mount St. Mary's withstood a second-half Iona rally as the Gaels held an 11-to-1 advantage in shots in the final 45 minutes.
Natalie Murphy's goal in the 62nd minute cut the Mount lead to 2-1, but the Gaels (1-7-2) were not able to get the equalizing tally.
For the game, Iona held a 22-to-11 edge in shots while each team had corner kicks. Mount keeper Alicia Miller had 10 saves in the game, including four in the second half. Trista Rivera made six stops for the Gaels.
Mount St. Mary's hosts Bucknell on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. That game is a make-up from the September 14 contest that was cancelled due to heavy storms.
