Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (September 18, 2011)--The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team lost a hard-fought game, 1-0, to Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
The Peahens (1-6-1) scored the lone goal of the game with 27 seconds left in the first overtime period. Emily Fenice received a nice combination play from Maggie Neiswanger and Chloe Zmolek, and she finished the shot to the lower left of the goal to lift Saint Peter's to the win.
The Mount (1-4-1) had five quality scoring chances in the first half, but were unable to convert. Sadie Winship had her shot deflected high by Saint Peter's keeper Caitlin Hoffer in the 18th minute. Freshman Alicia Mirando nearly gave the Mount the lead, but her shot in the 22nd minute went off the post.
Just a minute later, Winship had a good scoring chance, but her header went over the net. Jackie Corley grabbed a loose ball in the penalty area in the 38th minute, but could not get a lot on her shot and it was cleared away by a Saint Peter's defender. Kelly Baker had a free kick 15 seconds later, and her shot again was tipped over the cross bar.
In the second half, the Mount had its best scoring chance in the 49th minute when Sarah Malpezzi had her shot smothered by Hoffer and Baker's rebound went high. Winship had a chance stopped with just under 10 minutes left as well.
Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller made three saves in the loss while Hoffer had eight saves in the game. The Mountaineers outshot the Peahens, 22-to-8, in the game while having a 9-to-3 margin in corner kicks.
The Mount returns to action on Friday, September 23, with a 4:00 p.m. game at VMI.
Game Notes: The all-time series between the teams is now tied, 4-4...The Mount has scored two goals in six games this season...Four of the Mount's six games this year have gone to overtime with the Mount posting a 1-2-1 record in those contests...The Mount is 0-3 at home this year, losing by a 1-0 score each time.
