Emmitsburg, Md. (May 6, 2011)--Cody Lehrer
scored four goals to lead top-seeded Mount St. Mary's past No. 4
seed Bryant, 14-9, in the Northeast Conference Tournament
semifinals at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. The Mount
scored 10 second-half goals to rally from a 5-4 halftime
deficit.
Trailing 5-4 at the half, Bryant Schmidt and Eric Ososki each
scored to open the second half to give the Mount its first lead of
the game, 6-5, 4:26 into the third quarter. The Bulldogs
(8-9) answered just 13 second slater on Mason Poli's second goal of
the game, but the Mountaineers then rattled off the next seven
goals to seal the victory.
Lehrer scored the first two goals of the seven-goal run to give
the Mount an 8-6 lead. His second goal was the highlight of
the game, a behind-the-back score with 5:29 left in the third
quarter that pushed the lead to two goals. Daniel Stranix
added an unassisted score just under two minutes later to give the
Mountaineers a 9-6 lead after three quarters of play.
Mount St. Mary's (8-6) scored the first four goals of the final
quarter to seal the win. Andrew Scalley and Brett Schmidt
scored two minutes apart to extend the advantage to 11-6 before
Ososki and Connor Carey finished the seven goal run that gave the
Mount a 13-6 lead. Bryant had a three-goal run to cut the
Mount lead to 13-9 before Scalley scored with 30 seconds left to
complete the scoring.
Lehrer finished with four goals to pace the Mount offense while
Scalley added three goals and an assist. Ososki chipped in
two goals and an assist with Brett Schmidt scoring twice for the
Mountaineers. Bryant Schmidt and Stranix added a goal and an
assist in the win.
Peter McMahon led the Bulldogs with two goals and two assists
while Max Weisenberg and Poli each had a pair of goals in the
loss.
Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo, the NEC Defensive
Player of the Year, made 11 saves in the win while Jameson Love
made seven saves while allowing 13 goals in 58:50 of play.
Bryant started the game strong, taking a 4-2 lead after one
quarter of play. Weisenberg and McMahon each scored in the
opening 2:31 of the game to stake Bryant to a 2-0 lead. After
Lehrer scored to get the Mount on the scoreboard, Poli scored to
make the score 3-1. Lehrer scored again for the Mount ahead
of McMahon's second goal of the game that gave Bryant a 4-2
advantage.
With the win, the Mount advances to the NEC Championship game on
Sunday, May 8, against Quinnipiac at 1:00 p.m.
