Emmitsburg, Md. (April 30, 2011)--The Mount St.
Mary's men's lacrosse team was edged by visiting Bryant, 9-8, in
double overtime at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. Senior
goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo made 13 saves in the loss.
The Mount (7-6, 4-1 NEC), which clinched the Northeast
Conference regular season title last week, will host the NEC
Tournament on Friday, May 6, and Sunday, May 8, at Waldron Family
Stadium. The Mountaineers will face fourth-seeded Bryant at
7:00 p.m. on Friday while #2 seed Quinnipiac will play #3 seed
Robert Morris at 4:00 p.m. The championship game is set for
1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Evan Roberts scored the game-winning goal 17 seconds into the
second overtime period to lift Bryant (8-8, 3-2 NEC) to the
victory. Roberts, who took the face-off, scored the
game-winner from about 12 yards in front of the goal.
Mount St. Mary's had rallied from a 7-5 deficit after three
quarters of play to force the extra sessions. Daniel Stranix
scored with 12:39 left in the game to cut the deficit to 7-6 before
Bryant Schmidt's second goal of the game evened the score with 9:19
left.
The Bulldogs regained the lead on a Gary Crowley goal with 1:54
left, but the Mount answered on Andrew Scalley's third goal of the
game to knot the score at 8-8 with 1:00 left. The Mount won
the face-off and had the final possession of regulation, but
Stranix shot wide in the final seconds.
In the first overtime, Bryant won the face-off and had one shot
go wide before turning the ball over with just under a minute
left. Mount St. Mary's had a chance to earn the win, but Eric
Ososki's shot with 10 seconds left was stopped by Jameson Love.
Scalley paced the Mount with three goals while Bryant Schmidt
added a pair. Stranix finished with a goal and an assist with
Brett Schmidt and Mike Adkins also scoring.
Roberts led the Bulldogs with two goals and an assist while
Peter McMahon chipped in two goals and one assist. Crowley
finished with a pair of scores while Dan Sipperly, Travis
Harrington and Colin Dunster also scored in the victory.
T.C. DiBartolo paced the Mount with 13 saves while Love had 11
saves for Bryant. The shots were even at 36-36 in the game
while Bryant held a 37-29 edge in ground balls.
Mount St. Mary's had a strong first quarter, taking a 3-0 lead
after 15 minutes of play. Scalley opened the scoring 2:04
into the game on a feed from Cody Lehrer. After a Brett Schmidt
goal, Scalley scored with just 12 seconds left in the quarter for a
3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs fought back, outscoring the Mount 5-1 in the second
quarter to take a one-goal lead at the half. Bryant scored
twice in the final 1:47 of the half to take the lead.
