Men's Lacrosse Falls to Loyola, 14-10

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 26, 2011)--Loyola scored 12 second-half goals to earn a 14-10 win over Mount St. Mary's at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Andrew Scalley paced the Mount with four goals in the game.

The Mount (3-4) played a solid first half, taking a 4-2 lead at the break. Brett Schmidt scored the opening goal of the game for the Mount while Mike Sawyer countered for Loyola as the score was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter.

Loyola's Patrick Fanshaw scored a transition goal on a feed from long stick midfielder Scott Ratliff 32 seconds into the second quarter, but the Mount scored the final three goals of the half to take the lead. Scalley scored his first of the day to start the streak with 8:49 left in the half. Cody Lehrer converted a Brett Schmidt pass 56 seconds later to give the Mount a 3-2 advantage. Bryant Schmidt scored with 26 seconds left in the half to push the advantage to 4-2. Mount goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo made eight saves in the opening half as Loyola held a 15-to-12 lead in shots.

The Greyhounds (4-3) came out flying in the second half, scoring the first four goals of the third quarter to take a 6-4 lead. David Butts started the run with a goal 1:27 into the half before Fanshaw tallied back-to-back extra-man goals to give Loyola the lead. Defender Reid Acton's first goal of the year completed the streak.

Brett Schmidt stopped the streak with his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to 6-5 with 8:13 left in the quarter. From there, the two teams exchanged goals with Scalley scoring with 15 seconds left in the third quarter to cut Loyola's lead to 8-7 heading into the final quarter.

The Mount evened the score when Lehrer was credited with his second goal of the game when a Loyola defender sent a pass into his own cage 16 seconds into the fourth quarter. Chris Palmer got the goal back for Loyola to push the lead back to 9-8, but Bryant Schmidt converted a pass from twin brother Brett, for an extra-man goal with 10:30 left in the game to tie the score at 9-9.

Palmer and Chris Basler scored back-to-back goals to give Loyola an 11-9 advantage. Matt Langan added assists on each of the goals for the Greyhounds. Scalley countered with his fourth goal of the day when he came from behind the cage to beat Loyola goalie Jake Hagelin to cut the deficit to 11-10. The Greyhounds were penalized on the play, but won the face-off and Langan scored a man-down goal with 4:53 left to restore a two-goal advantage. Sawyer and Langan added goals in the final three minutes to round out the scoring.

Scalley finished the game with four goals, giving him a team-high 22 points this season (16g, 6a). Scalley stretched his consecutive games with at least one point streak to 24 games with his four-goal day. Brett Schmidt added two goals and two assists in the loss while Lehrer and Bryant Schmidt each had a pair of goals for the Mountaineers. Brett Schmidt has seven goals and three assists over the past two games for the Mountaineers.

Langan had two goals and three assists to pace the Loyola offense while Fanshaw chipped in three goals and an assist in the win. Sawyer and Palmer added two goals each with Basler chipping in a three-point day (1g, 2a) in the win. Ratliff finished with a goals and two assists as well for Loyola.

DiBartolo made nine saves for the Mountaineers while Hagelin had six for the Greyhounds. Loyola held a 34-to-28 advantage in shots in the game and a 31-to-26 edge in ground balls. Each team won 14 face-offs in the contests.

This was the first meeting since 2003 between the two teams and Loyola now owns a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday, April 2, with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Robert Morris in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
