Women's Basketball Concludes Two Games In Brooklyn With Monday Matinee

opening tip...

Monday's game between Mount St. Mary's and Long Island marks the 41st meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1989-90 season.
• The Mountaineers lead the series 26-14, but the Blackbirds have won 14 of the last 17 meetings including sweeping the season series last year.
• Prior to Long Island's 59-48 decision in the last meeting on Jan. 23, 2010, the previous four meetings were decided by a combined nine points.
• The road team has won three of the last four games in the series.
• The last Mount St. Mary's victory was a 65-63 win on Feb. 9, 2009 at the Wellness Center.

about the blackbirds... Long Island comes into the game 10-6 overall and 2-3 in Northeast Conference after defeating Wagner 67-50 on Saturday. The Brooklyn program was selected as the preseason favorite in the NEC.
• Senior F Chelsi Johnson paced the Blackbirds with 16 points against the Seahawks. The senior ranks third on the team with 10.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
• Junior G Kiara Evans added 11 points on Saturday. Evans is second on the team with 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. The senior posted 22 points in wins against Boston University on Nov. 27 and against Delaware State on Dec. 11.
• Senior G Heidi Mothershead chipped in 10 points against Wagner. The senior is averaging 5.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.
• Junior F Ashley Palmer leads the team with 13.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. The junior fueled Long Island with 18 points in a 63-51 win against Central Connecticut State on Jan. 8. Palmer also registered a season-high 20 points in a 58-40 victory against North Florida on Dec. 31.

last time we met... Long Island defeated Mount St. Mary's 59-48 on Jan. 23, 2010. Selina Mann paced the Mount with 10 points. Jamie Halloran and Mary Dunn each added nine points. Ashley Palmer fueled the Blackbirds with 21 points and 19 rebounds. Heidi Mothershead added 11 points and Chelsi Johnson chipped in 10 points.

last time out... Freshman Ashley Christie scored a career-high 19 points to lift Mount St. Mary's past St. Francis (N.Y.) 79-39 on Saturday.

quick hits on st. francis (n.y.) game... Mount St. Mary's used a 26-0 run in the first half to erase a 4-3 deficit and grab the lead for good at 29-4.
• The Mount started the game by hitting 12 of its 17 shots from the floor. During its 26-0 run, the Mountaineers made its first nine shots and connected 11 of 14 in that stretch. The Mount freshmen posted 19 of the 26 points in the run.
• Freshman Ashley Christie hit 7 of her first 8 shots in the game including 5 of 6 from behind the arc for her career-high 19 points. The freshman finished 7 of 11 from the floor and 5 of 8 from behind the arc. The Mount is 2-0 when Christie is the team's leading scorer.
• Fellow freshman Kayla Grossett added a career-high 16 points against the Terriers. The freshman has recorded at least 15 points in two of her last four games after posting 15 points against Quinnipiac on Jan. 4
• Senior Leah Westbrooks played for the first time since Nov. 23 at Cincinnati while freshman Rachel Mathews saw the court for the first time since Nov. 20 against UMES. Mathews notched a career-high nine points and five rebounds in the game while Westbrooks posted two points and two rebounds in six minutes of action.
• Sophomore Tara Lonergan and freshman Jessie Kaufman each added eight points in the win. Lonergan has posted eight points in four of the last six games, including three double-figure performances. The sophomore is averaging 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in that stretch.
• Senior Mary Dunn posted four points and seven rebounds. The senior moved into 24th place in program history with 1,010 career points.
• Mount St. Mary's held a rebounding edge for only the second time this season and for the second time in the last four games (Quinnipiac, Jan. 4). In both games, the Mount held a one-point advantage.
• It marked the first time the Mountaineers won a game by 30 points since downing Robert Morris 90-57 on Feb. 23, 2004.
• Mount St. Mary's only had nine turnovers in the game. It was the fifth time under head coach Bryan Whitten the squad had single-digit miscues and the first since having eight turnovers in a 65-63 win against Long Island on Feb. 9, 2009.
• The squad held a team under 50 points for the first time this season and under 40 points for the first time since its last trip to the Pope P.E. Center last season with a 61-33 victory on Jan. 21, 2010.
• Mount St. Mary's scored 70 points for the third time this season and the third time in the last six games. The squad is 3-3 in the last six games. The Mount is averaging 68.8 points per game in that stretch after averaging 47.6 points per game in the first 10 games.
• The Mountaineers have scored 70 points 14 times under head coach Bryan Whitten. The squad is 12-2 in those games, including 3-0 this season.

The senior registered 18 points against Loyola on Dec. 11, 12 points against Sacred Heart on Dec. 20, a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31 and 17 points against Quinnipiac on Jan. 4. Dunn is averaging 15.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in her last five road games.
• Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 9.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game on the road. The freshman posted 13 points at Virginia on Nov. 14, 10 points at Navy on Dec. 8, 11 points at Sacred Heart on Dec. 20, 11 points at San Francisco on Dec. 31 and a career-high 19 points at St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has four double-figure games on the road.

• Senior Mary Dunn is averaging 17.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in the last five games. The senior has registered four double-figure performances in that stretch, including a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31, 17 points at Quinnipiac on Jan. 4, 21 points against Robert Morris and 18 points and 12 rebounds against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10.
• Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 10.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in that stretch. The freshman has three 10-point performances in that span, including 11 points against the Dons, 10 points against the Red Flash and a career-best 19 points against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15.

stat stuffer... Sophomore Selina Mann has done it all on the court this season whether its scoring, rebounding, assisting or thievery.
• Mann has scored double figures in five games this season, including five of the last 11 games. The sophomore notched a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29 and scored the game-winning basket against San Francisco on Dec. 31.
• The sophomore has grabbed at least five rebounds twice this season and the 5-4 guard has a 10-board game on her career resume.
• Mann has dished out four assists 12 times this season, including a career-high eight helpers against the Dons and seven dimes at Navy on Dec. 8 and at St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15. She ranks second in the league with 4.46 assists per game.
• The sophomore has recorded two steals in 14 of the 15 games and four steals four times, including a career-best five thefts against San Francisco. Mann currently leads the conference with 2.63 steals per game.

notes on dunn's 1,000 point game... Senior Mary Dunn became the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 points with her layup at 17:05 in the second half against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10.
• Dunn is the first player to reach the milestone since current assistant coach Brianna Gauthier joined the club against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 7, 2009.
• Dunn is the 15th player to reach 1,000 points at home. The Mount is 11-3 in those games.
• The senior is the third 1,000-point scorer head coach Bryan Whitten has coached at the Mount, joining Gauthier and Tiffany Green (2007-08).
• Dunn is the eighth player in program history to have 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in her career.

tops in the league... Mount St. Mary's has posted the most wins in the Northeast Conference since joining the league in 1989-90 with 242 victories.
• The Mount has the third-most wins in league history, trailing only Monmouth (255) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (261).
• The Mount is 242-134 in Northeast Conference play, including 135-56 at Knott Arena and 107-78 on the road.

wins vs. losses... Mount St. Mary's is averaging 73.8 points per game in its four wins compared to 49.5 points per game in the 12 loses. The squad is 4-2 when it reaches 60 points.
• The Mountaineers are shooting 44.1 percent when it wins, but just 32.2 percent in a loss.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in every game except Quinnipiac (Jan. 4) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (Jan. 15), but are only -3.7 on boards in wins and -11.2 in losses.

that was a career day... Freshman Ashley Christie posted a career-high 19 points against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15. Fellow freshman Kayla Grossett also had a career afternoon against the Terriers with 16 points.
• Freshman Kelly Guerriero had a career-best 11 points against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10.
• Senior Mary Dunn notched a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31.
• Sophomore Selina Mann scored a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29. Fellow sophomore Tara Lonergan also established a career-best against the Spartans with 13 points.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman each recorded a career-high nine points against Cincinnati on Nov. 23.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson had a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.

a new year, a new start... In January, the Mount is 219-86 and 134-78 since switching to Division I.
• The Mountaineers are 69-30 at home and 65-38 on the road since switching to Division I.
• Once the New Year hits, the Mount has posted a 469-217 overall mark and a 268-146 since turning Division I in the last three months of the season.
• The Mount is 11-20 under head coach Bryan Whitten in the month.
• Mount St. Mary's is 6-10 at home and 5-10 on the road in the month under Whitten.

hearing your name called at the start... Head coach Bryan Whitten has only had 18 players start in his four-year tenure at the Mount.
• The Mount has used three different starting lineups this season.
• Senior Mary Dunn has started 104-straight games in her career.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has started 70 of her 81 games played.
• Junior Sandra Andresson has started 64 of the 77 games she has played.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson started 15 of the 26 games she has played, including 10 straight.
• Freshman Ashley Christie has started the first 16 games of her collegiate career.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman started the first nine games of the season before fellow freshman Kayla Grossett started games against Sacred Heart and San Jose State before sophomore Tara Lonergan made her first career start against San Francisco and has started the last five games.

three-pointer to start scoring is deadly for the mount... Mount St. Mary's registered a 3-pointer for its first field goal of the game nine times this season. The Mount is 1-8 in those games and picked its first win after starting the game with a 3-pointer against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15.
• The squad has hit a trey to start its scoring against Virginia (Nov. 14), Cincinnati (Nov. 23), Towson (Dec. 1), Pittsburgh (Dec. 4), Navy (Dec. 8), Loyola (Dec. 11), Quinnipiac (Jan. 4), Saint Francis (Pa.) (Jan. 10) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (Jan. 15).
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman has hit the squad's opening 3-pointer in four times, senior Mary Dunn has three opening treys while junior Sandra Andresson and freshman Ashley Christie each have one.
• The Mountaineers are 3-4 when its first field goal comes from inside the arc.

preseason poll... Mount St. Mary's was picked 11th according to the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Long Island, who advanced to the NEC Championship Game last season, received six first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while the defending league regular season champions Robert Morris was selected second after garnering three first-place nods. Sacred Heart placed third ahead of the defending NEC Tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.), who picked up two first place votes while Monmouth nabbed the final first-place vote to finish fifth in the poll. Quinnipiac, Central Connecticut State, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, the Mount and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 12-team field.

the good and the bad for henderson... Sophomore Sydney Henderson scored a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Henderson scored 13 of her 17 points in the first eight minutes of the second half.
• After establishing a new career-high on her bucket with 12:01 left in the second half, the sophomore left the game with a knee injury.
• Henderson will miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury sustained in the game against Virginia.

let's play to 60 points... Mount St. Mary's is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when it scores 60 points in a game or holds the opponent under that total.
• The Mount is 21-13 when it scores 60 points in a game, but 14-51 when it does not reach 60 points.
• Defensively, the Mountaineers are 27-22 when the opponents are held under 60 points and 8-46 when the opponent reaches 60 points.

three keys to whitten success... The Mount is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when the squad leads at halftime, in rebounding or keeps the opponent under 60 points.
• The Mount is 28-13 when he holds the lead at halftime, 2-2 when the game is tied, but just 6-53 when trailing at the break.
• The squad is 16-15 when it holds a rebounding edge in a game, but just 18-49 when the opponent has the advantage and 2-4 when the two teams have equal boards.
• Mount St. Mary's is 27-22 when it holds opponents under 60 points.

hitting 20 points in a game... Senior Mary Dunn and sophomore Selina Mann are the only two players on the roster that has scored 20 points in a game in their career.
• Dunn posted a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31 and had 21 points against Robert Morris on Jan. 8. The senior also accomplished the feat twice last season when she recorded 21 points against Colgate on Nov. 24, 2009 and had 20 points against Long Island on Jan. 16, 2010.
• Mann became the first player this season to turn the trick when she posted a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29, 2010.
• The Mount has registered 19 20-point performances and two 30-point games under head coach Bryan Whitten. The squad is 11-8 when a player reaches 20 points and 2-0 when a player scores 30 in a contest.

dunn on the all-time lists... Senior Mary Dunn is making a mark on the program's all-time list.
• The senior currently sits in 24th place in program history with 1,010 career points. Next on the list is Heather Wable (1,046, 1991-95).
• The senior also ranks seventh in program history in rebounds per game (7.3 rpg.). Dunn moved into ninth place on the program's all-time rebounding list with 752 caroms after grabbing 12 boards against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10. The senior can move into eighth place and ahead of Susie Rowlyk (766, 1991-95) with 22 rebounds.
• Dunn also ranks seventh in Mount Division I history with 15 career double-doubles. She can move up a spot with two double-doubles.
• The senior is also third on the Mount's games started list with 104 career starts and can move into second place with eight starts to tie former teammate and current assistant coach Brianna Gauthier (109, 2005-09).

other players on the move... Along with senior Mary Dunn, the Mount has several players making a move on the program's all-time scoring chart.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has 535 career points to rank 50th in program history and can move into 49th place with two points and into 48th place with 12 points. Westbrooks also ranks 13th in Mount Division I history with six double-doubles and can move into eighth place with four double-doubles.
• Junior Sandra Andresson currently sits in 59th place in program history with 435 points and can move into 58th place with 14 points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson has 160 career points to sit in 85th place. She can move into 84th place with 13 points and 83rd place with 15 points.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has 228 points for her career to rank 76th in team history and can move into 74th place with 11 points.
• Freshman Ashley Christie has 150 points in her first season to rank 94th in program history. The freshman can move into 93rd place with one point, 92nd place with two points, 90th place with six points and 89th place with 23 points.

1,000 games in program history... Mount St. Mary's played its 1,000th game in program history on Saturday against Robert Morris.
• The Mount is 633-369 in program history.

bcs schools on the schedule... The first six games in the 2010-11 campaign could have arguably been the toughest start in program history.
• The Mount faced Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia in the season opener and Big East affiliates Cincinnati on Nov. 23 and Pittsburgh on Dec. 4.
• It marked the first time since the 2000-01 season the Mount will play three BCS schools when the squad faced Virginia (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC) and Seton Hall (Big East).
• Mount St. Mary's also played three big conference schools in 1988-89 and 1994-95.

freshmen for one-two-three... Freshmen Jessie Kaufman, Ashley Christie, Rachel Mathews and Kayla Grossett each knocked down their first career shot attempt in the game against Virginia.
• Kaufman gave the Mount a 3-2 lead with a 3-pointer 35 seconds into the game and Christie nailed 3-ball of her own to reclaim the lead for the Mountaineers at 6-4 with 18:28 left in the first half.
• Mathews recorded a 3-point play the traditional way after scoring a layup at 15:55 and then converting the free throw to give Mount St. Mary's a 9-7 advantage.
• Grossett nailed a 3-pointer on her first collegiate attempt at 5:25 in the second half.

in their debut... The five freshmen each saw action against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Ashley Christie and Jessie Kaufman both made their collegiate debut in the starting lineup. Christie posted 13 points, including 10 in the second half, along with two rebounds and two assists. Kaufman had eight points, three rebounds, an assist and a block.
• Kayla Grossett, Rachel Mathews and Kelly Guerriero each saw time off the bench. Grossett had six points and two rebounds while Mathews had three points, three rebounds and an assist. Guerriero played the final 1:55 and missed her own shot attempt. Guerriero notched her first collegiate point in the second half against American on Nov. 17.

in the non-conference slate... Mount St. Mary's is 74-115 in non-conference games since joining the Northeast Conference in 1989-90.

home sweet home... In its 24th season at Knott Arena, Mount St. Mary's has posted a 204-100 overall mark, including 69-43 in non-conference play and 135-57 in league play since moving across Route 15 from Memorial Gym.

northeast conference history... Prior to last season, the Mount had advanced to 20-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments.
• Mount St. Mary's is 17-17 in the NEC Tournament.
• The Mountaineers have not won a tournament game since a 50-45 win against Sacred Heart on Mar. 4, 2001.
• Mount St. Mary's won tournaments in 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95, including earning the league's first two NCAA Division I bids.

the underlining whit... Head coach Bryan Whitten is in his four season at the Mount in 2009-10. The Mount is 36-68 overall under Whitten.
• Whitten has defeated all 11 other teams in the NEC.
• The Mount is 15-32 overall at Knott Arena and 10-20 in NEC play under Whitten.
• The Mountaineers fair better on the road with a 21-36 overall mark away from Emmitsburg and 11-17 in league play.
• Whitten picked up his first Mount win with a 55-51 decision at Lafayette on Nov. 17, 2007 and earned his 25th career in at Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2009.
• Whitten earned his 250th win of his career against Quinnipiac on Jan. 30, 2010.

foreign flavor... Mount St. Mary's has three international players on the roster at the same time for the first time in program history.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks (Ireland) was the third international player at the Mount, junior Sandra Andresson (Estonia) became the fourth international player in Emmitsburg and freshman Kayla Grossett (Canada) became the fifth international player at the Mount.
• The trio follows Katie Walton (Canada, 1998-02) and Dita Krumberga (Latvia, 2004-07).
