Emmitsburg, Md. (April 24, 2010)-Siena stunned
Mount St. Mary's by scoring four goals in the final six minutes in
an 8-7 come-from-behind win in a battle for first place in the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Waldron Family Stadium on
Saturday afternoon.
Cody Lehrer had three goals to pace the Mount offense in the
game while Bryant Schmidt added two goals and two assists. Andrew
Scalley chipped in a goal and two assists for the Mount while Ben
Trapp won 12-of-15 face-offs and picked up a game-high 10 ground
balls.
Siena's Ryan Duggan scored three goals and added two assists in
the win while Shaun Dunn chipped in a pair of goals.
Both goalkeepers played well in the game with the Mount's T.C.
DiBartolo making 10 saves while Siena's Brent Herbst had 12 stops
in the contest. The Mount held a 34-to-30 edge in shots and a
25-to-19 margin in ground balls.
In the decisive fourth-quarter, Schmidt gave the Mount a 6-4
lead when he made a nice move to free himself for the goal with
10:38 left in the game. Scalley followed when he came out from
behind the cage and beat Siena goalkeeper Herbst to push the lead
to three with 9:29 on the clock.
Siena (9-4, 6-0 MAAC) started its comeback when Dunn converted a
Duggan pass for an extra-man goal with 6:06 on the clock. The
Saints made the score 7-5 with 3:23 left on a Duggan goal that was
assisted by Chris Roth.
The Saints evened the score just 29 seconds later when Duggan
notched his third goal of the game in transition on a pass from
Evan Gallina. Roth netted the game-winner with 48 seconds on the
clock.
Mount St. Mary's (8-4, 5-1 MAAC) had a chance to tie in the
closing seconds, but the shot by Jake Willertz with nine seconds
left was stopped by Herbst.
In the first quarter, Siena's Kyle Curry started the scoring
with an unassisted scored. The Saints carried the play for the
first eight minutes, outshooting the Mount 9-0 in that span.
Mount St. Mary's was able to turn the momentum and evened the
score at 1-1 when Mark Stapor converted a Scalley feed with 3:16
left in the first quarter. Siena's Dunn scored on a pass from
Duggan for a 2-1 score at the end of one quarter.
The Mount tied the game on the first of three Cody Lehrer goals
with 10:45 left in the half. Duggan countered with 5:05 left in
the half to give the Saints a 3-2 lead at the intermission.
In the third quarter, the Mount scored the first three goals to
take a 5-3 advantage. Bryant Schmidt opened the scoring with the
first of his two goals just 1:14 into the half. Lehrer then scored
back-to-back goals for the two-goal Mount lead.
On the first goal, Bryant Schmidt's shot was saved by Herbst,
but the ball popped into the air and Lehrer leaped up and shot in
the same motion to give the Mount a 4-3 lead. He then ripped a
shot past Siena goalkeeper Bill Kelly in a man-up situation to
complete his hat trick. Lehrer leads the Mount with 41 goals this
season.
The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, April 28, with a 4:00
p.m. home game against VMI at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
