Emmitsburg, Md. (April 17, 2010)--Mount
St. Mary's jumped to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over
Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at
Waldron Family Stadium on campus. Freshman Andrew Scalley (Arnold,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) had two goals and an assist in the win for
the Mountaineers.
The Mount (7-3, 4-0 MAAC) opened the
scoring when junior Mark Stapor (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell)
beat Manhattan goalkeeper Jon Fiorillo with a bounce shot 2:37 into
the game. Scalley added an unassisted goal with 7:21 left in the
first quarter to give the Mount a 2-0 advantage.
Scalley's second goal of the game just 14
seconds into the second quarter pushed the Mount's lead to 3-0
before sophomore Bryant Schmidt (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken)
scored with just under 10 minutes left in the half for a 4-0 Mount
lead.
The Jaspers (4-7, 2-2 MAAC) scored twice
in the final 1:06 of the half to close the margin to 4-2. Sal
Spatarella's score with 1:06 left put Manhattan on the scoreboard.
With 16 seconds left in the half, Jordan Sherman collected a loose
ball at midfield and sent the ball toward the Mount net while on
his back. The ball found James Synowiez wide-open in front of the
cage, and he buried the shot to make the score 4-2 at the half.
The Mount grabbed a 5-2 lead when Scalley
found Schmidt open streaking toward the cage on a change. Schmidt
buried the shot for his second goal of the contest. Manhattan's
Kelly Mahon responded just 13 seconds later to make it 5-3.
Spatarella's extra-man goal with 5:13 left in the third made it a
5-4 contest.
The Mount, however, held on from there to
preserve the win. Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) made a game-saving stop in the final minute to give the
Mount the win. Manhattan's Sal Perrotto found Justin Jensen
wide-open at the top of the crease, but Jensen's point-blank shot
was denied by DiBartolo with 49 seconds remaining.
Mount St. Mary's held a 31-to-27
advantage in shots and a 25-to-16 margin in ground balls. The
Mount's Ben Trapp (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) won 10-of-13 face-offs
while collecting a game-high nine ground balls. DiBartolo made
10 saves in the win while Fiorillo had nine saves for
Manhattan.
The Jaspers held the Mount's Cody Lehrer,
who entered the game leading the nation in goals per game, off the
scoreboard.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on
Wednesday, April 21, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's.
