Detroit, Mich. (April 10, 2010)-
Sophomore Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney)
scored six goals to lead Mount St. Mary's past Detroit, 12-9, on
Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Brett Schmidt (Great Mills,
Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added a goal and six assists in the
win as the Mountaineers improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Brett Schmidt's seven-point day was a career high while his six
assists were the most by a Mount player since Roland Miller had six
in a 17-9 win over Canisius on March 28, 1998.
Lehrer's six-goal game was the fourth time this season that he
has scored five or more goals in a game. Lehrer leads the Mount
with 35 goals this season, the most by a Mount player since Matt
Warner set the school record with 52 goals during the 2003
season.
Freshman Andrew Scalley (Arnold, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) chipped in two goals and two assists while
sophomore Jake Willertz (Severn, Md./Mount St.
Joseph) added a pair of goals in the win. Sophomore
Bryant Schmidt (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken)
posted a goal and an assist in the win.
Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) made 13 saves in the win while
face-off man Ben Trapp (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) won
16-of-24 face-offs with a team-high seven ground balls.
With the game tied at 4-4 at the half, Detroit (2-9, 1-3 MAAC)
scored the first two goals of the third quarter to grab a two-goal
advantage. The Mount answered by scoring the next six goals of the
game to take a 10-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Scalley started the run with his second goal of the game with
8:07 left in the third quarter to cut the Detroit lead to 6-5.
Willertz tied the score with an extra-man goal 56 seconds later and
Lehrer gave the Mount the lead for good when he converted a Scalley
pass with 4:53 left to put the Mount ahead 7-6. Lehrer added
another goal with 11 seconds left in the third quarter to give the
Mount a two-goal advantage.
Brett Schmidt tallied his lone goal of the day 30 seconds into
the fourth quarter. Willertz then posted his second man-up goal of
the game 39 seconds after the Schmidt goal to give the Mount a
commanding 10-6 lead.
Detroit's Tim Lehto stopped the Mount scoring run with a goal
with 10:35 left, but the Mount sealed the win with a pair of man-up
goals. Lehrer notched his sixth goal of the day with 7:51 left in
the game on a pass from Brett Schmidt while Bryant Schmidt scored
with 7:06 left on the EMO to put the Mount ahead 12-7. Detroit's
Matt Gregson and Brad Janer rounded out the scoring in the
game.
Gregson led Detroit with four goals while Lehto added two goals
and an assist. Goalkeeper A.J. Levell made eight saves in the
loss.
The game was a chippy affair with the two teams combining for 20
penalties. The Mount went 6-for-11 on extra-man opportunities
while Detroit was 2-for-9. Detroit held a 37-to-33 shot advantage
in the game while the Mount had a 38-to-36 ground ball edge.
The Mount's 6-3 record is the best start to a season since the
1999 squad also started 6-3. The Mount is 3-0 in the MAAC for the
first time since the 2005 campaign.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, April 17, with a
1:00 p.m. home game against MAAC rival Manhattan at Waldron Family
Stadium on campus.
