Emmitsburg, Md. (February 23, 2010)--Mount St. Mary's opened the 2010 season with a 15-7 loss to No. 2 Virginia at Waldron Family Stadium on campus on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) paced the Mount with four goals and an assist in the game.

Lehrer had four goals and an assist while leading the Mount with eight shots in the game. Freshman Bryant Schmidt (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added a goal and an assist in the game with Andrew Scalley (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Eric Ososki (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added a goal apiece.

Chris Bocklet led Virginia with four goals and an assist while Connor English chipped in three goals in the victory. Colin Briggs tallied a pair of goals with Steele Stanwick chipping in a goal and two assist for the Cavaliers. Brian Carroll, Shamel Bratton, Nick O'Reilly, Matt White and Chris LaPierre also scored for Virginia.

Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), a First Team All-MAAC selection last season, had a solid game for the Mountaineers, making 16 saves in the game. Virginia's Adam Ghitelman allowed four goals while making four saves in three quarters of action to earn the win.

The Cavaliers (2-0) started the game strong, taking a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Briggs opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 3:43 into the game. Bocklet then took over, scoring a pair of goals in a span of 1:19 for a 3-0 lead. Steele Stanwick then converted a Ryan Benincasa pass seven seconds after Bocklet's second goal to give the Cavaliers a 4-0 advantage.

The Mount got on the scoreboard with 1:47 left in the opening quarter on a Lehrer goal. Schmidt added an assist on the play. Bocklet, however, gave Virginia a 5-1 lead by scoring with just two seconds left in the opening quarter.

Bocklet's fourth goal of the game 2:05 into the second quarter gave the Cavaliers a commanding 6-1 advantage. After a Connor English goal for Virginia, Lehrer converted a Christian Kellett (King of Prussia, Pa./Malvern Prep) pass for his second goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 7-2. Schmidt then scored his first collegiate goal to make the score 7-3, but Chris LaPierre and Matt White each scored over the final two minutes of the second quarter to give Virginia a 9-3 halftime lead.

Shamel Bratton and Brian Carroll scored back-to-back goals for the Cavaliers in the third quarter before Scalley posted his first collegiate goal for the Mount with an extra-man goal to make the score 11-4 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, English scored twice and Briggs added his second goal of the day for a 14-4 advantage. Ososki and Virginia's O'Reilly traded goals before Lehrer scored the final two of the game for the final margin of 15-to-7.

Virginia held a 46-to-22 advantage in shots in the game while holding a 38-to-21 edge in ground balls.

The Mount returns to action at Jacksonville on Tuesday, March 2.
