Emmitsburg, Md. (April 11, 2009)--Mount St. Mary's
toppled Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Leader Providence,
7-5, in men's lacrosse action at Waldron Family Stadium on campus
on Saturday afternoon. Junior Jim O'Shea (Rockville Center,
N.Y./Chaminade) posted two goals and an assist to pace the Mount in
the victory.
The Mount scored twice in a span of 28
seconds in the first quarter to take a 2-0 advantage. Eric Ososki
(Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored his first collegiate goal
on an assist from O'Shea to open the scoring in the game. Just 28
seconds later, freshman Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney)
notched his seventh goal of the year to push the Mount's lead to
two.
The score remained that way until
Providence's Colin Tigh beat Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper T.C.
DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) 43 seconds into the
second quarter to cut the Mount's lead in half. Senior Geery Grant
(Blue Point, N.Y./Chaminade) countered that score with his fourth
goal of the year on a pass from Ososki with 3:19 left in the half
to give the Mount a 3-1 halftime advantage.
Mount St. Mary's (2-7, 2-2 MAAC) held an
18-to-7 advantage in shots in the opening half and a 15-to-9 margin
in ground balls.
The Mount added to its lead just 51
seconds into the second half when Ososki found a wide-open
Christian Kellett (Audubon, Pa./Malvern Prep), who buried his
seventh goal of the year to give the Mount a 4-1 lead. Tigh
notched his second goal of the game with 5:07 left in the third
quarter to make the score 4-2, but defender Matt Nealis
(Lindenhurst, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) completed an end-to-end
rush with his second goal of the year for a 5-2 Mount lead after
three quarters of play.
O'Shea's first goal of the game gave the
Mount a four-goal advantage, 6-2, with 11:26 left in the contest,
but the Friars (5-6, 4-1 MAAC) were able to rally. Jackson Fallon
scored twice and assisted on a Bobby Labadini goal to cut the
Mount's advantage to 6-5 with 2:35 left in the game.
The Friars forced a Mount turnover with
1:30 left in the game, but turned the ball over in front of the
Mount cage with 1:00 on the clock. The Mount was forced out of
bounds on the ensuing possession, but the Friars handed the ball
right back with just under 50 seconds left. The Mount then sealed
the win on O'Shea's second goal of the game when he converted a
Jonny Lefferts (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) pass into a wide-open
net to make the score 7-5.
The Mount held a 29-to-26 advantage
in shots in the game while the Friars posted a 30-to-28 margin in
ground balls. Mount goalkeeper
DiBartolo made seven saves in the game while counterpart Robert
Bryan made 12 saves in the game.
O'Shea tallied two goals and an assist
for his first multiple-point game of the year while Ososki finished
with a goal and two assists in the victory. Brendan Harrison
(Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) picked up a team-high five ground
balls for the Mount.
Fallon and Tigh each had two goals and an
assist in the loss for Providence. Ryan Riedl tallied a game-high
six ground balls in the game for the Friars.
Providence
falls to third place in the MAAC with the loss behind leaders Siena
(4-0) and Marist (4-0). The
Mount is tied for fourth with Manhattan (2-2) with Saint Joseph's
(2-3) and Canisius (2-3) right behind. The top four teams qualify for the
MAAC Tournament.
The Mount returns to action on Wednesday,
April 15, when Saint Joseph's visits for a 4:00 p.m. game at
Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
