Softball Splits Doubleheader With George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) registered three RBIs and Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) tossed her first shutout of the year to lead Mount St. Mary's past George Washington 5-0 in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday. The Colonials rallied to take a 5-4 decision in the nightcap.

Everist smacked her third home run of the year in the fourth and then capped the Mount's (5-22) five-run outburst in the first game with a two-run double in the fifth. Fowler tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for her fifth win of the year.

Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) added four hits, two runs scored and an RBI, and Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) recorded three hits and an RBI in the two games.

Amanda Gabriel paced the Colonials (9-18) with a 2-for-4 performance in the nightcap, including smacking the game-winning hit.

In the opener, Mount St. Mary's scored in three-straight innings to score five runs to earn a 5-0 victory.

The Mount took the lead for good with two runs in the third. Kristin Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) led off the inning with a single to center field before Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) was hit by the pitch. After Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) plated Fusco on a run-scoring single to right field, Curreri came around to score on Burk's ground out to second base for a 2-0 edge.

Everist added to the Mountaineers lead when she smacked a solo homer to left center to start the fourth inning for her third home run of the year.

Mount St. Mary's then sealed the victory with two runs in the fifth. Burk singled to center field with one out and Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) doubled to left center before Everist plated both runners with a double to left center to give the Mount a 5-0 advantage.

In the second game, the Mount grabbed a 4-0 advantage before George Washington scored the final five runs including two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 victory in the nightcap and a twinbill split.

After cutting the deficit to 4-3 with two runs in the third and one in the fourth, the Colonials completed the comeback in their last at bat. Tori Sensi opened the stanza with a single to center and Elisa Van Kirk reached on a fielder's choice. Lauren Wilson moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt for the second out. Down in the count 1-2, George Washington's Gabriel smacked a two-run single to bring home Sensi and pinch runner Waterman for walk-off victory.

Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring in the second game with four runs in the third. Christiansen started the rally with a single to center before Burk reached on a single down the right field line and Everist walked to load the bases. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Zingle each reached on a fielder's choice to score Christiansen and Burk. After Zimmerman brought home Everist with an RBI single to left field, Katie Donovan (Seabrook, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) reached on a fielder's choice to bring Reeder home and cap the four-run rally and score Reeder.

George Washington answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the margin in half after Heidi Penna plated a run on a ground out to second and Krissy Mackiewicz singled to bring in the second run. Gabriel then made it a one-run game when she drilled a solo homer to left field in the fourth and then Gabriel handed the Colonials the win with her two-run walk-off single in the seventh for the 5-4 win.

Fowler, who became the program's all-time leader in games pitched on Saturday against Saint Francis (Pa.), moved into second place on the program's career innings pitch list (478.1). The senior also recorded her 29 career win and will become just the third player in team history with 30 wins with her next victory.

The Mount continues its three-team road trip at Wagner on Saturday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
