Emmitsburg, Md. (March 28, 2009)--Lafayette edged
Mount St. Mary's, 10-8, in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup
at Waldron Family Stadium on campus on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Mike
Adkins (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) scored a career-high four
goals to pace the Mount (1-5) in the loss.
The Leopards (3-3) jumped on the scoreboard first when Matt Mersky
scored the first of his three goals of the afternoon just over four
minutes into the game. The Mount, however, answered with a pair of
goals in a 15-second span to grab the lead. Anthony
Golden (Timonium, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored teh first while
Adkins notched the second with 6:24 left in the opening quarter.
It was the first collegiate goal for Adkins. Freshman Christian
Kellett (Audubon, Pa./Malvern Prep) posted assists on each of
the Mount's goals. Lafayette's leading scorer, Tom Perini, evened
the score at 2-2 at the end of one quarter with his 16th goal of
the year.
Mount St. Mary's grabbed a two-goal advantage early in the second
quarter. Freshman Ryan
Shewell (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) notched his first
collegiate marker just 15 seconds into the quarter on a nice feed
from Kellett. Kellett then found Adkins for his second goal of the
day to give the Mount a 4-2 advantage with 10:17 left in the
opening half.
Lafayette, however, controlled play the remainder of the second
quarter, evening the score at 4-4 on goals from Stefan Bauer and
John Galassi. Lafayette outshot the Mount, 15-5, in the second
quarter and held a 13-to-3 advantage in ground balls.
The Leopards opened the second half by scoring twice to take a 6-4
advantage. Mersky scored an unassisted goal and defenseman Matt
Mozer found a wide-open Joe Howard on a transition goal to give the
Leopards a two-goal advantage. Adkins scored his third goal of the
day to cut the margin to one, but Ryan Hansen countered just 40
seconds later to make the score 7-5 Lafayette. Senior Geery
Grant (Blue Point, N.Y./Chaminade) scored his second goal of
the year with 1:02 left in the third to make the score 7-6.
The Mount evened the score when Adkins notched his fourth goal of
the day with Kellett assisting on the play with 11:59 remaining.
Lafayette, however, took control of the game by scoring three
consecutive goals. Mersky's third goal of the game gave Lafayette
a 8-7 advantage with 9:55 left. The Leopards added an insurance
goal just 23 seconds later when face-off man Cesar Munoz fed a
streaking Galassi for his second goal of the game. Perini notched
an extra-man goal with 3:50 on the clock for a 10-7 lead. The
Mount's Kellett rounded out the scoring with his first goal of the
day with 1:06 left.
Adkins finished with four goals on the day while Kellett tied a
career high with six points on a goal and five assists. Golden
added a goal and an assist in the loss for the Mount. Goalkeeper

DiBartolo made 16 saves for the Mountaineers.
Mersky led the Leopards with three goals and an assist while Perini
and Galassi added two goals each. Stefan Bauer chipped in a goal
and an assist in the win while goalkeeper Jeff Canfield made 10
saves for Lafayette.
Lafayette outshot the Mount 39-to-24 in
the game and held a 43-to-20 advantage in ground balls. Munoz won
15 of 20 face-offs in the contest for Lafayette, picking up a
game-high 12 ground balls.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, March 31, with a 4:00 p.m.
home game against Georgetown at Waldron Family Stadium.
