Men's Lacrosse Opens Season with 10-2 Loss at No. 2 Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. (February 24, 2009)—Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made a career-high 21 saves, but it was not enough as No. 2 Virginia defeated Mount St. Mary's, 10-2, in the Mount's season opener at Klockner Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers (4-0) controlled the play throughout the game, holding a 60-16 advantage in shots, but DiBartolo's stellar effort in the cage kept the Mount in the game.

Virginia jumped to a 2-0 lead behind a pair of Brian Carroll goals in the opening 2:37 of the game. The Mount, however, was able to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard the rest of the quarter to keep the game at a two-goal deficit.

Virginia scored twice in the opening minute of the second quarter to grab a 4-0 advantage. Carroll tallied the first marker to 47 seconds into the quarter to complete his hat trick while Shamel Bratton scored just eight seconds later. Gavin Gill added an extra-man goal with 2:30 left in the half to make the score 5-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Virginia's Nick Elsmo, Rhamel Bratton and Shamel Bratton found the back of the cage to give the Cavaliers an eight-goal lead heading into the final quarter.

The Mount took advantage of a pair of Virginia penalties to open the fourth quarter and get on the scoreboard. Freshman Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney), who led the Mount with five shots, scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from fellow freshman Christian Kellett (Norristown, Pa./The Malvern Prep).

Virginia countered with a pair of goals before Mount freshman Keith McKinley (Timonium, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tallied his first collegiate goal with 12:35 left in the game. Neither team was able to score the remainder of the game.

DiBartolo's 21-save night bested his career high of 19 saves set last season in the Mount's 6-5 overtime loss to Marist. The sophomore made 18 saves in the first half of the Mount's loss to Virginia last season.

Graduate student Brendan Flanagan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) picked up his six ground balls for the Mount in the loss. Flanagan returned to the Mount lineup after missing all but two games last year due to injury.

Carroll finished with three goals while Shamel Bratton chipped in two goals and an assist in the victory. Adam Ghitelman made four saves while allowing two goals in 57:36 to earn the victory in goal.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, March 3, when No. 12 Navy visits Waldron Family Stadium in the home opener. Opening face-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
