Emmitsburg, Md. (September 14, 2008)--Saint
Peter's scored in the first half and held on for a 1-0 win over
Mount St. Mary's in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at
Waldron Family Stadium. Mount goalkeeper Alicia
Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made four saves in the
game.
Saint Peter's (2-3-0) broke through for the only goal of the game
with 2:59 left in the first half. Samantha Lockhart took the ball
from midfield, streaked in to the top of the penalty box,and put a
low shot into the lower left corner of the net for her first goal
of the season. It was the seventh straight game that the Mount
trailed 1-0 at the half.
The Mount (0-7-0) put the pressure on in the second half,
outshooting the Peahens 10-1, but could not beat Saint Peter's
goalkeeper Leigha Ashmen for the equalizing goal. The Mount's best
scoring chance came with 4:15 left when Emily
Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) drilled a shot from 10
yards out that Ashmen got her hand on. The Mount was unable to get
to the rebound as the Peahens cleared the ball away.
Mount freshman Sadie
Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) had a great scoring
chance as well when her header went just wide of the goal with
16:17.
Leamen made eight saves in the game to earn the shutout victory for
the Peahens.
The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when New Jersey
Tech visits Waldron Family Stadium for a 4:30 p.m. game.
