Emmitsburg, Md. (August 30, 2008)--The Mount St.
Mary's women's soccer home opener was spoiled by visiting Marshall
as the Thundering Herd earned a 4-0 victory at Waldron Family
Stadium on campus on Saturday afternoon. Marshall's Katie Ball had
two goals and an assist in the win. Mount freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made eight
saves in the loss as the Mount falls to 0-2 on the season.
Marshall carried play throughout the
game, holding a 22-3 advantage in shots. The Thundering Herd (2-0)
took an early lead when Molly Snead chipped a ball past Miller from
six yards out after receiving a pass from Ball 12:32 into the
contest. The score remained that way to the half with Marshall
outshooting the Mount 10-1 in the opening stanza.
Marshall sealed the win with three second
half scores. Ball took a through ball in the middle from Angela
DeSumma to tally her first goal of the game 10:48 into the second
half. She added her second score when Missy Gordon crossed the
ball to Ball, who tapped it in from right in front of the goal.
Kaitlin Devine's rebound goal off Erika Duncan's shot off the post
with 3:13 left rounded out the scoring.
The Mount's best chance to score came
with just over a minute left. Meghan Haspert (Woodbine,
Md./Glenelg) crossed the ball to junior Cali
Jackson (Columbia, Md./Good Counsel), who had a point
blank shot on goal. Marshall keeper Liz Orton, however, stopped
the shot to preserve the shutout.
Miller recorded her second-straight
eight-save game for the Mount while Orton made one save in the win
for Marshall.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday
when American visits Waldron Family Stadium for a 4:00 p.m.
game.
