Emmitsburg, Md. (April 26, 2008)--Siena defeated
Mount St. Mary's, 12-7, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
matchup at Waldron Family Stadium on campus on Saturday afternoon.
Mount freshman Dan Mohr (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area) scored a
season-high four goals in the loss.
Siena (10-6, 4-4 MAAC), which was eliminated from the MAAC playoff
race with Manhattan's win over VMI today, held a 4-0 lead at the
half. Shaun Dunn opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game,
firing a shot past Mount goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie,
Md./Archbishop Spalding). The Saints made it 2-0 when Ryan Duggan
stole a DiBartolo pass and fired the ball into the empty cage with
7:53 left in the opening quarter.
The Saints added a pair of goals in
the second quarter for a 4-0 lead. Chris Zarins scored an
unassisted tally before Matt Girsh tallied a behind-the-back goal
with 34 seconds left in the half off a pass from charly
Rogener. The Mount held a
14-to-13 advantage in shots in the opening half, but Siena
goalkeeper Brent Herbst made seven saves to keep the Mountaineers
off the scoreboard. The Mount also held a 12-to-5 advantage in
ground balls in the opening half.
The Mount got back into the game quickly
when Mohr tallied back-to-back goals in the opening 2:29 of the
second half. Joe Derwent (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) assisted on the
first goal while Justin Schmidt (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken)
posted his first collegiate point with an assist on the second.
Siena's Kenny Mazzone answered the Mohr goals, but the Mount's
Brendan Harrison tallied the first of his three scores on the day
to make it 5-3.
The Saints, however, countered with goals
from John Rogener and Zarins before Harrison's second goal of the
day made it 7-4. Siena's Bryan Hale converted a Mazzone feed to
make it 8-4 heading into the final quarter.
Siena scored the first three goals of the
quarter to cruise to the win. Duggan tallied two of thos scores
while John Rogener had two assists in the streak. Mohr added a
pair of goals while Harrison notched a goal in the quarter as the
Mount fell 12-7.
Mohr's four-goal game gives him a
team-high 26 goals on the season. Harrison finished with three
goals and an assist for his first collegiate four-point game for
the Mount while Derwent, a senior, had a pair of assists in his
final home game in a Mount uniform.
Duggan led Siena with three goals
while Zarins and Hale each had two goals and an assist. John
Rogener and Mazzone added three-point games as well with a goal and
two assists each.
Siena outshot the Mount 27-to-13 in the
second half to hold a 40-27 margin in the game. Herbst made nine
saves for the Saints while DiBartolo made nine for the Mount.
The Mount closes out the 2008 season on
Monday night when they travel to Homewood Field in Baltimore to
face No. 6 Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live
on ESPNU.
Game Notes: Siena has
won three straight against the Mount after Mount St. Mary's won the
first 11 all-time meetings...Senior Phil Thomas also made his final
appearance at Waldron Family Stadium...He had four ground balls in
the game.
