Lewisburg, Pa. (March 8, 2008)--#15 Bucknell
bolted to an early lead en route to a 14-6 victory over Mount St.
Mary's in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Geery Grant
paced the Mount with a career-high three goals in the contest. Joe
Mele and Tim Brandau paced Bucknell with five goals each in the
game.
Mele scored the first of his five goals
to put the Bison (3-1) on the scoreboard first. Tim Brandau then
connected for back-to-back scores for a 3-0 lead with 6:17 left in
the opening quarer. Mele, Doug Buckley and Brandau each added
scores for a 6-0 Bison lead after one quarter of play.
Grant got the Mount on the board with his
first score of the game 1:13 into the second quarter, but Bucknell
answered with the next three scores for a 9-1 lead at the half.
Bucknell outshot the Mount 27-10 in the first half and held a 21-6
advantage in ground balls in the opening 30 minutes.
Grant converted a Mark Stapor pass 2:05
into the second half to make the score 9-2, but Bucknell sealed the
victory by scoring the next five goals of the game for a commanding
14-2 advantage. Brandau scored twice during the five-goal run.
Brendan Flanagan broke the streak with his first goal at the Mount
with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Mount closed out the game by scoring
all three goals in the fourth quarter. Grant completed his hat
trick on another Stapor pass and freshman Dan Mohr chipped in a
pair of goals to make the final score 14-6.
Bucknell finished the game with a
47-to-27 shot advantage and a 38-to-17 margin in ground balls.
Mount goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo made 12
saves in 42:21 of action while Kyle Overs did not allow a goal and
made four saves in 17:39 for the Mount. Bucknell starting
goalkeeper Nick Sciubba made three saves and allowed two goals in
40:01 to earn the victory.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday,
March 11, when #3 Virginia visits Waldron Family Stadium on
campus.
