Annapolis, Md. (February 29,
2008)No. 11 Navy defeated Mount
St. Mary's, 12-5, in men's lacrosse action at Navy-Marine Corps
Memorial Stadium on Friday night. Sophomore Jim O'Shea paced the Mount
(0-2) with a career high two goals and one assist.
The Midshipmen (3-1) took a
2-0 lead after the first quarter on goals from Gregory Clement and
Michael Beggins. The Mount
cut the lead in half when Geery Grant converted a Joe Derwent feed
2:51 into the second quarter.
Navy answered with three
straight goals from Tim Paul, Nick Mirabito and Brendan
Connors. Freshman Dan Mohr
countered with his third goal of the season to make the score 5-2
at the half.
The Midshipmen took control
of the game with the first three goals of the third quarter. Joe Lennon, Paul and Mirabito
found the back of the cage for an 8-2 Navy lead. O'Shea scored an unassisted goal
before Mirabito scored his third goal of the game to make the score
9-3 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mohr scored his second goal
of the game with 10:36 remaining, but Navy sealed the win by
scoring the next three tallies. Patrick Moran connected for
back-to-back goals while Beggins made it 12-4 with 7:12 left in the
contest. O'Shea's second
goal of the day rounded out the scoring in the game.
O'Shea had two goals and an
assist to pace the Mount while Mohr added two markers. Freshman Jon Rodrick recorded his
first collegiate point with an assist. Mirabito led Navy with three goals and
two assists while Paul chipped in a pair of goals and two assists
in the game.
Freshman goalkeeper T.C.
DiBartolo made 13 saves in 56:39 of action while Kyle Overs made a
save in his first appearance in goal for the Mount this year. Matt Couglin made five saves for
the Midshipmen.
Freshman Ben Trapp won
13-of-18 face-offs in the game and picked up a team-high seven
ground balls. Navy outshot
the Mount 44-19 in the game while holding a 39-28 advantage in
ground balls.
The Mount returns to action
on Saturday, March 8, at No. 19 Bucknell.
