Emmitsburg, Md. (October 25, 2008)--Monmouth
earned a 5-0 win at Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference
women's soccer action at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday
afternoon. With the loss, the Mount falls to 2-14-1 overall and
1-5-1 in the NEC.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard 14:11 into the contest when Jennie
Vartebedian scored on a rebound for a 1-0 advantage. Alessandra
Detata started the play with a corner kick that Joni DeMoor headed
off the left post. Vartebedian was there for the rebound for her
second goal of the year. April Damurjian added her first goal of
the year just over six minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. The ball
bounced to Damurjian off a corner kick and she buried a shot from
15 yards out to beat Mount goalkeeper Alicia
Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) who was screened on the
play.
The Mount had several good chances to score in the contest with
the best coming 15 minutes into the second half. Junior Emily
Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) broke in on the Monmouth
goal, but her shot was denied by Monmouth goalkeeper Lia
Fierro. The Hawks (13-2-1, 6-1-0 NEC) countered the next minute
when DeMoor scored the first of her two goals in the game in the
63rd minute. DeMoor added her second score before Lindsey Walsh
concluded the scoring with her first goal of the year for
Monmouth.
Monmouth held a 21-to-9 advantage in shots in the game, including a
13-to-3 margin in the first half. Miller mad two saves in the
first half for the Mount while Amanda
Kitzmiller (Mine Hill, N.J./Morris Catholic) made
three saves in the second half. Fierro made six saves to earn her
sixth shutout of the year.
It was the final home game for Mount seniors Erin
Canning (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Meghan
Haspert (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg), Colleen
Regan (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Samantha
Roos (Frederick, Md./Frederick).
The Mount concludes the season with a pair of road games next
weekend, beginning at Long Island at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
