The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team lost at Canisius, 15-9,
on Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
matchup. The loss all but eliminates the Mount (2-9, 2-4 MAAC)
from playoff contention in the league.
The Golden Griffins (6-6, 5-2 MAAC) scored the first two goals
of the game when Brad Favero and Jim Blocho scored in a span of 21
seconds. Mundorf scored 34 seconds late to cut the deficit to 2-1
with 4:14 left in the first quarter, but Kevin Ross answered
Mundorf's goal to give Canisius a 3-1 advantage.
The Golden Griffins outscored the Mount 4-1 in the second
quarter to take control of the game. Michael Blocho scored the
first two goals of the second quarter for a 5-1 lead. After the
Mount's Eric Seifert tallied his 14th goal of the year, Tom Hensel
and Favero scored to make it 7-2 at the half.
Canisius took control of the game by scoring the first three
goals of the third quarter. The Mount rallied by scoring three
times over the final 2:25 of the third quarter to cut the margin to
10-5, but Canisius scored four straight goals to open the fourth
quarter to seal the victory.
Michael Blocho and Kevin Ross each scored four times in the game
while Hensel chipped in three goals and two assists. Canisius
goalkeeper Angus Dineley made 12 saves to earn the victory.
Mundorf had three goals to pace the Mount with Peter Kerwin adding
two goals and an assist. Dave Orban, Joe Derwent and Joe Bello
added a goal and an assist in the loss for the Mount. Goalkeeper
Joe Zolezzi made 10 saves and allowed 13 goals in 49:36 of action
for the Mount.
Canisius outshot the Mount, 39-30, in the game and held a 31-22
advantage in ground balls. Canisius dominated the face-offs by
winning 20 of 26 in the contest.
The Mount is 2-4 in the MAAC standings and is in seventh
place with two games to play. The top four teams in the MAAC
advance to the MAAC Tournament which will be held at the Mount's
Waldron Family Stadium on May 4 and 6.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wed., April 25, at VMI in
a MAAC contest.
