Emmitsburg, Md. (March 24, 2007)--Joe Bello
scored four goals to lead Mount St. Mary's past Providence, 12-7,
in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at Waldron Family
Stadium on Saturday. The game was a rematch of last year's MAAC
championship game. The Mount improves to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in
the MAAC.
Providence (0-5, 0-2 MAAC) opened the scoring with a Michael
Farley tally 4:35 into the game. The Mount, however, answered by
scoring the next three goals for a 3-1 advantage. Peter Kerwin
scored an extra-man goal with 3:51 left in the first quarter to
knot the score at 1-1. Eric Seifert tallied his first goal of the
year to give the Mount a 2-1 advantage heading into the second
quarter.
Defender Phil Thomas gave the Mount a 3-1 advantage when he
scored off the face-off to open the second quarter. Jackson
Fallon's extra-man goal cut the Mount lead in half, but Seifert's
second goal of the day made it 4-2 with 3:28 left in the half.
Bennett Murphy responded for the Friars with an unassisted score to
cut the Mount lead to 4-3 at the half.
Providence evened the score on a Bobby Labadini tally 1:14 into
the third quarter, but the Mount took control from there, scoring
five unanswered goals for a commanding 9-4 lead. Mundorf scored
twice in the run with Joe Derwent, Kerwin and Bello also finding
the back of the cage.
The Friars got back in the game with back-to-back extra-man
goals, but Bello scored three times in the fourth quarter to seal
the win for the Mount.
Bello had a game-high four goals for the Mount, giving him a
team-high 10 on the season. Mundorf added two goals and two
assists while Seifert added two goals and an assist in the
victory. Derwent added a goal and two assists while Kerwin chipped
in two goals and four ground balls. Devin McBride had two goals to
pace the Friars while Brendan Ryan dished out a game-high three
assists.
Mount goalkeeper Joe Zolezzi made nine saves in the victory
while Peter Littell had five saves in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, March 28, with
a 3:00 p.m. home game against Marist.
Game Notes...This was the first game this
season the Mount was not playing a ranked opponent. The Mount
scored 12 times after entering the game with 16 goals on the
season...The Mount improves to 72-16 all-time in MAAC regular
season games...Providence won both meetings last year, including an
8-6 win in the MAAC Championship game...The Mount now leads the
all-time series, 8-6.
